IN THE SNOW by John David Hazlett is a beautiful, impressionistic and moving portrait of snow. This two movement work, I. Snowfall II. Snowsled, will have your Holiday Concert audience on their feet! A piano prelude introduces the main motive and is followed by flurries in the woodwinds that eventually build to a huge and beautiful climax depicting a steady snowfall. Snowsled begins with a rough first trip down the hill but builds into a fast and steady snow sled ride. The piece concludes with a short solo piano coda.

NOVA: A STAR SUITE by John David Hazlett for concert band

A nova is a white dwarf star that suddenly and temporarily becomes extremely bright as a result of the explosion at its surface of material accreted from an expanding companion star. The material, mostly hydrogen and helium, is attracted by the white dwarf’s gravity and accumulates under growing pressure and heat until nuclear fusion is ignited. Unlike a supernova, a nova is not blown apart by the explosion and gradually returns to its original brightness over a period of weeks to years.

SEANCE by John David Hazlett is an exciting work for concert band. Séance, depicts a sacred ceremony of communication with spirits and those that have gone before. Whispers, dissonant tone clusters, along with unexpected twists and turns give the feeling of schizophrenic and other-worldly interactions. The spirit is summoned, visits the room, and exits in a final hushed whisper.

A Miracle Unfolded by John David Hazlett

John David Hazlett is Director of Bands at McGavock High School in Nashville, Tennessee.  An alumnus of McGavock High School, Hazlett earned his Bachelor of Science (Magna Cum Laude) in Music Education from Austin Peay State University and Masters of Arts in Instrumental Conducting from
Middle Tennessee State University. Hazlett is an active composer and arranger, designing music for marching and concert bands across the United States. His original compositions and custom music designs have been performed both nationally and internationally.  His Three Moods for Brass Quintet was widely acclaimed and received third place in the National
Young Composer’s Competition and his Seance was performed recently in Pamplona, Spain. 

During his tenure at McGavock, Hazlett has continued the long-standing tradition of superior performances in both marching and concert venues. Hazlett is also an active marching band adjudicator having judged events in both Kentucky and Mississippi.  Hazlett holds memberships in Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society, Tennessee Music Education Association, National Association for Music Education, Tennessee Bandmasters Association, the Professional Educators of Tennessee and has served on the Executive Board of the Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association. Hazlett is a two-time recipient of the National Band Association’s Certificate of Merit for Marching Excellence. In 2014, Hazlett was named Educator of the Week by ABC WKRN Nashville and was recognized as a CMA Music Teacher of Excellence in 2016-2017.
