A very impressive work - a dark, intense music drama - i fancy i hear characters, events of the novel portrayed at times - the encounter with Esmerelda where the music grows quieter and magical in part 1 - perhaps a portrait of Schwerdtfeger about 10 minutes into part 2 - but overall i hear movingly and excitingly depicted Adrian's lonely solitude alternating with his stretches of intense creativity. Congratulations and thank you John for this splendid work!

Excellent work John.  Great tension and drama.  Very engaging.

I listened again with greater focus.  It was very rewarding.  This is a truly great piece of music.  The music is at times powerful and dramatic for sure, but by the end of this musical journey a resonance is created to so much more.  It emotionally connects and creates a need to travel on the musical journey again leading to even greater discovery.

This is fantastic!  This sounds like early 20th century avant garde, ala Schoenberg.

This is the 3rd of the series of Playlists which include those works by which I would most like to be remembered. White Winter, Black Spring is a setting of texts by Robert Lowell for tenor, baritone and large ensemble. It was commissioned by the BBC for the Huddersfield Festival and first performed there by Martyn Hill, Henry Herford with the Lontano Ensemble conducted by Odaline de la Martinez. Faustus was another BBC commission for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales who premiered it under the baton of Jan Latham Koenig. Sinfonia was commissioned by the Sinfonia of Cambridge who performed it with the conductor Grant Llewellyn, but this BBC studio recording is by the City of London Sinfonia conducted by Richard Hickox.
