When I Go Mad

A veteran of Glasgow’s thriving indie scene in the eighties, JJ White was the songwriter and guitarist of The Wiseacres: the Cherry Red debutantes who gained notable praise from such artists as Felt, Close Lobsters and the Monochrome Set. The group produced a sound body of work until their disbanding as the eighties came to a close. Following a brief stint in Mouse Eat Mouse in the aughts where he penned the music for their most praised LP ‘Mair Licht’ and a reunion of the Wiseacres in 2013, White sought to reinvent himself as a solo artist. He got to work on his debut album ‘An Ocean of Space’ in collaboration with his producer Colin ‘Soapy’ Cameron in 2019. His current sound (recommended for fans of Damien Jurado, Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Beck) is a delicate blend of lavish and thoughtful balladry with easy going Velvet Underground-esqe folk rock. He is presently in a place where most artists wish they could be as he reinvents himself as an artist with no need to conform to expectations and no sign of stopping soon.
