Well, it's been quite a year and, in my little attempt to brighten the mood since way back last March, I've enjoyed making these 'All Together Now' mixes, largely based around retro funky vibes, with the odd surprise  thrown in to keep you guessing. This is the last one if its sort for now (at least the last one I expect to record in Lockdown conditions), and it follows the same template of mostly old songs and grooves given the contemporary edit treatment and a bit of bump 'n' bass!

Welcoming in the New Year with another celebration of the intersection of jazz, jazz fusion and house grooves that I often find so inspiring. This mix is deliberately buoyant and energetic as I started pulling it together for New Year's Eve and wanted to greet the year with a suitably positive vibe!

Back 2 The JazzHouse - New Year Swinging 2022

Aroop Roy is a producer, musician and label head, who joins the dots between electronic music and borderless organic sounds. From house, disco and techno to jazz, funk and Afrobeat, he has enjoyed universal acclaim as a producer and DJ.

Like his productions, his sets are full of personality and style and have earned him a growing reputation as a uniquely gifted DJ. In 2022, he closed We Out Here Festival with Mr Scruff who described Aroop as a 'ridiculously skilled selector, musically able to move in any direction with ease'. We were fortunate enough to witness this magic, so it's with great pleasure we welcome him to the series. Enjoy

SlothBoogie Guestmix #370 - Aroop Roy

Funny thing this 'jazz' malarkey - for example, some folks regard my Jazz Loungin' mixes as just, well, 'too jazzy' (... yep, a phrase I hear sometimes). But that shouldn't be a problem here, given this mix features tracks that offer jazz flavour and musicality that is very much tailored for dancefloor action. You might also call much of this 'headphone house' (even though some grooves veer beyond basic four-to-the-floor rhythms) as it should reward diligent listening too, particularly if you don't mind a bit of head-nodding and foot-twitching at the same time. This is also another mix that gets close to my roots as a DJ - eclectic dance music, with plenty of imagination, soul, and creativity!

Back 2 The JazzHouse Spring 2024

I was recently invited to spin some tunes at a local street party, and I thought what might I play that would appeal to a broad range of ages, tastes and cultures, albeit being tunes I'd also be happy to play and listen to (and, in the case of my more energetic neighbours, even nod and shimmy to...)?  This was the initial set I came up with... (I am going to try out a variation of this set again in another East London street in a matter of weeks - let's see how it goes...!)

Here's a generous buffet of winter-warming jazz-flavoured goodness. While it may prove far too diverse for the purist and it doesn't seek to appeal to those looking for familiarity, I still hope there's something in this selection to satisfy and nourish the hearts and souls of most open-minded listeners. It was a pleasure to pull together and I hope some of that pleasure emerges from your speakers and headphones...

Jazz Loungin' Winter 2025

Pulling together a recent set (and mix) after being asked to 'avoid the jazz stuff' then leads me, almost inevitably, to do the opposite... So, here, we have a set that is largely (although not solely) powered by jazz-fuelled dance tracks, alongside some soulful, swinging deep house grooves. It's not jazz, it's not even all house music, and some of it deserves a little closer listening in addition to the odd shimmy and shake.... But give it a listen and judge for yourself!

In selecting the music for this mix, I cheekily chose from our playlists many of those tunes that had jazz in the title (be it artist, track or mix name) after a 'debate' we had with a barroom 'expert' who objected to our use of the phrase 'jazz-house', even though we tried to explain to him we weren't making any great claims for it and were not interested in genre boundaries.

Also, future such mixes are likely to be once-a-year offerings at best as, from next year, Mr Madrid has decided to return to his nomadic beach-bar existence and my work and family life is restricting the number of times we can get together in far-flung destinations for these back-to-back sessions, so savour them while you can!

Dexter Madrid & JbM's Late Summer 2016 Tour Pt.1

Long live the jazz-house sessions! It's been close to 3 years since I last had the pleasure of spinning tunes and talking records with the global beachcombing, wandering vagabond DJ and walking music encyclopaedia that is Dexter Madrid.

As the chances of us reuniting are currently a little slim, I thought I'd keep the flame alive by producing at least one mix a year in tribute to our great back-to-back sessions (perhaps in the hope of tempting Dex out of semi-retirement... or whatever is keeping him busy and off the grid these days). We always wished to fuse our shared passion for jazz, in its many forms, with our love of deep (and soulful) house music and this is exactly what I hope to keep on doing (perhaps until we get back together and back-to-back).

As I've said many times before, if any of this takes your fancy, seek out and buy some music from these artists and their peers (far more nourishing for the soul and the artist's livelihood than that streaming malarkey!).

I've been listening (and buying) hip hop for many decades but, with fairly well-defined and selective tastes (decidedly 'old school', strongly leaning towards conscious, organic and jazzy/soulful trax, and with a penchant for 'abstract' instrumentals) and not being a turntablist, I haven't really considered it as part of my 'core' collecting or DJing output. But, having recently been asked to put together a few CDs, I enjoyed the selection process so much, I thought I'd share some of the tunes with you in a loosely-layered mix. As usual with all my mixes, this is definitely not a sequence of classics and all-time faves but, that said, it does include a fair few pioneer artists and some unmissable tunes.

DeHav Soulful Hip Hop Sessions Vol.1

The first deep house mix of 2021 and it's quite a moody one - perhaps not surprisingly given this strange and lengthy locked-down winter - although there's plenty of melody and musicality in there too. But I think the times - these quite extraordinary and challenging last few months! - have seeped through in the tone and mood of this mix, somewhere between the sombre and the celebratory, albeit charged with energy and, ultimately, optimism. Alright, it may just be a bunch of rhythmic tunes squeezed together at 122 bpm, but give it a listen and you may get a sense of what I mean...!

DeHavilland Deep Long Winter 2021

Like so many others, I started DJing as an extension of my record collecting and partying, the main intention being to celebrate and promote the music that had become such a central part of my life. I started collecting jazz, soul and funk in my late teens and by my mid-twenties had also started DJing occasionally in various small bars and warehouse parties. I subsequently became part of (and the resident DJ for) a number of club night and party promotion teams  - WordOfMouth, RIPE, SWDeep, Strange Fruit,  FRESH! and others... 

Musically, I was increasingly drawn to the house sounds that were emerging in the late 80s and 90s. While a revelation, this stuff also sounded to me like the contemporary expression of the music I had always loved, but with a renewed commitment to inspire people to dance. 

And I figured if I gained so much enjoyment from these great tunes then others would too. I suppose all of us who enjoy playing music for others to hear (and maybe dance to) are evangelists at heart.

More recently, this has led to forays into production and the odd record release (...NUSA Records still lives!). I try not to get too hung up or limited by genres and my shelves and hard drives host an ever-widening spectrum of music. 

That said, I find I always eventually return to my roots and, in my DJing, attempt to fuse contemporary grooves with those elements of black music that got me started on this journey.
