Well, it's been quite a year and, in my little attempt to brighten the mood since way back last March, I've enjoyed making these 'All Together Now' mixes, largely based around retro funky vibes, with the odd surprise  thrown in to keep you guessing. This is the last one if its sort for now (at least the last one I expect to record in Lockdown conditions), and it follows the same template of mostly old songs and grooves given the contemporary edit treatment and a bit of bump 'n' bass!

All Together Now - The Final Lockdown Party Tape

I got the opportunity to officially remix this classic song to coincide with the release of a new Donny Hathaway box set. I was given the original multitrack master of the studio version (different from the live version)and it consisted of 8 different instrument and vocal tracks (as opposed to the more usual 24 tracks) 
When I take on a remix, my first goal is to make it work on a current dance floor. I like to stay very close to the originally recorded sound and In most case there's plenty to be reworked on the multitrack master to achieve this. 
This case proved a little different as there were few rhythm elements I could use to fit within current standards of club loudness levels. So I decided to take a slightly different approach, and add a new set of (acoustic) drums,  to bend the original Soul vibe a little towards Disco territory.

Aroop Roy is a producer, musician and label head, who joins the dots between electronic music and borderless organic sounds. From house, disco and techno to jazz, funk and Afrobeat, he has enjoyed universal acclaim as a producer and DJ.

Like his productions, his sets are full of personality and style and have earned him a growing reputation as a uniquely gifted DJ. In 2022, he closed We Out Here Festival with Mr Scruff who described Aroop as a 'ridiculously skilled selector, musically able to move in any direction with ease'. We were fortunate enough to witness this magic, so it's with great pleasure we welcome him to the series. Enjoy

I was recently invited to spin some tunes at a local street party, and I thought what might I play that would appeal to a broad range of ages, tastes and cultures, albeit being tunes I'd also be happy to play and listen to (and, in the case of my more energetic neighbours, even nod and shimmy to...)?  This was the initial set I came up with... (I am going to try out a variation of this set again in another East London street in a matter of weeks - let's see how it goes...!)

I've been listening (and buying) hip hop for many decades but, with fairly well-defined and selective tastes (decidedly 'old school', strongly leaning towards conscious, organic and jazzy/soulful trax, and with a penchant for 'abstract' instrumentals) and not being a turntablist, I haven't really considered it as part of my 'core' collecting or DJing output. But, having recently been asked to put together a few CDs, I enjoyed the selection process so much, I thought I'd share some of the tunes with you in a loosely-layered mix. As usual with all my mixes, this is definitely not a sequence of classics and all-time faves but, that said, it does include a fair few pioneer artists and some unmissable tunes.

DeHav Soulful Hip Hop Sessions Vol.1

The first deep house mix of 2021 and it's quite a moody one - perhaps not surprisingly given this strange and lengthy locked-down winter - although there's plenty of melody and musicality in there too. But I think the times - these quite extraordinary and challenging last few months! - have seeped through in the tone and mood of this mix, somewhere between the sombre and the celebratory, albeit charged with energy and, ultimately, optimism. Alright, it may just be a bunch of rhythmic tunes squeezed together at 122 bpm, but give it a listen and you may get a sense of what I mean...!

DeHavilland Deep Long Winter 2021

Like so many others, I started DJing as an extension of my record collecting and partying, the main intention being to celebrate and promote the music that had become such a central part of my life. I started collecting jazz, soul and funk in my late teens and by my mid-twenties had also started DJing occasionally in various small bars and warehouse parties. I subsequently became part of (and the resident DJ for) a number of club night and party promotion teams  - WordOfMouth, RIPE, SWDeep, Strange Fruit,  FRESH! and others... 

Musically, I was increasingly drawn to the house sounds that were emerging in the late 80s and 90s. While a revelation, this stuff also sounded to me like the contemporary expression of the music I had always loved, but with a renewed commitment to inspire people to dance. 

And I figured if I gained so much enjoyment from these great tunes then others would too. I suppose all of us who enjoy playing music for others to hear (and maybe dance to) are evangelists at heart.

More recently, this has led to forays into production and the odd record release (...NUSA Records still lives!). I try not to get too hung up or limited by genres and my shelves and hard drives host an ever-widening spectrum of music. 

That said, I find I always eventually return to my roots and, in my DJing, attempt to fuse contemporary grooves with those elements of black music that got me started on this journey.
