Paulo Almeida, front man for Dili Allstars, Sol Nation and Mystic Trio has embarked  on a solo project and is releasing his third single, ‘Stay A While’.

Staying true to his island roots, this new track sets a scene for lover’s reggae, vibing with lyrics sung in both English and Tetum (Timor Leste), Paulo’s native language. The song speaks to spending time with the people you love, creating lasting memories and forging deep connections, opening to the mystery of life, love and the other side.

In the words of the Natural Mystic, Bob Marley,

"Live for yourself and you will live in vain. Live for others and will live again."

I really love this piece.

The vocals sit almost quietly above an instrumental which is smooth, warm, supportive, ethereal.

There’s very limited movement in that backing. 

A sequence of chords repeated.

Just as we settle into the piece the vocal steps up, breaking free from the rhythm, there’s an added echo to the vocal, almost a reverb.

It’s very clever.

I love the incorporation of this century’s tropes, such as swipe left as a metaphor of rejection, and as an embellishment of the lyrics.

There’s a feeling of the need for affirmation in these lyrics, “I just want to be adored,” and yet, the most dominant, repeated vocal phrase is “just ride.”

And yet the words “Come down” never appear in the lyrics.

Chris Wilson has been an essential part of blues and rock music in Australia since taking the stage with the Sole Twisters almost 40 years ago. Stints with Harem Scarem and Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls followed and he formed his own band, Crown Of Thorns, in 1982.
