Paulo Almeida, front man for Dili Allstars, Sol Nation and Mystic Trio has embarked  on a solo project and is releasing his third single, ‘Stay A While’.

Staying true to his island roots, this new track sets a scene for lover’s reggae, vibing with lyrics sung in both English and Tetum (Timor Leste), Paulo’s native language. The song speaks to spending time with the people you love, creating lasting memories and forging deep connections, opening to the mystery of life, love and the other side.

This is quite different to the classic Beatnik Preachers material.

First and foremost, it’s instrumental, without the clever beat poetry that is a feature of their work.

Second, the musical style is very different to their hip material.
But there’s a reason for this.

The track is described as a tribute to the late Nelson Riddle whose career stretched from the late 1940s to the mid-1980s, and to the others of that era who gave us that signature sound.

This piece highlights the artistry that Tok and the other band members are capable of.

The tune comes straight from that milieux, you can’t fault it.

The arrangement and performance are superb and true to the era.

You see, this is what you miss when you are not following musicians through their mailing lists or social media.

Maybe this will not appear on a Beatnik Preachers album, maybe you’ll never hear it apart from this review.

John has been involved in community radio since 1976, initially with a music program "Parcel of Rogues" on 7CAE-FM in Hobart, Tasmania. After moving to Geelong, he joined 94.7 the Pulse on the program "Folks Alive", which morphed into "~meanderings~."
