Conceived entirely for fun, this song cycle was written by my sister (writer and actress Katie Matz) and I, and is inspired by far too many hours spent playing Skyrim, which spawned a nagging feeling that not enough original music is sung in-world. 
Think of this as a small way to rectify the situation.

Once was a young man, soft but proud
Who dreamed farther than world allowed
'Twas dragon fire and frost he sought
And not the crown that was his lot

Of caverns deep and mountains cold
remembered from the songs of old.

He spent his days in thinking so
He one day formed his will to go
He left his home in dark of night
And to the wilds he took his flight

At river's edge he found his cause
A man in chains for unjust laws.

He asked the mer who shackles did hold
To set him free, this man so old
His back was bent with years of care
And silver was his fading hair

He laughed and told him "fool, young man,
This man was dead 'fore march began.

Then light in his hand it grew
And struck old man with sparks of blue
And in the dirt did elder lay
For fate decreed he died that day

But young man, though his heart had cried,
Gathered steel unto his side.

With shining sword he sprung at last
But Elven lord was far too fast
For sharp blue spark did find his heart
And tore the young man's world apart

So 'bove his chest the elf-mage stood

Saw crimson dragon in full flight

And though Elven lord did run away
He met his end in fire that day.

The dragon breathed it's words aloud
And they formed into a flaming cloud
That burnt the souls of every mer
Who gladly made old man suffer

When last to him it turned it's sight
The young man saw no will to fight.

The dragon stared with eyes of gold
That spoke of knowledge both secret and old
And words and thoughts he understood
It's will was neither evil nor good

And dragon said the day had come
He learned to speak the Dova tongue.

With Dragon, for years he studied alone
The words to rend flesh from bone
And words to heal with magic unseen
While his body became Strong and lean

When he at last reclaimed his crown
The people came from every town.

Once was a man now strong and proud
Who spoke the ancient tongue aloud
For dragon fire and frost was taught
And for his people he then fought

This is an arrangement I did for the Materia Collective release, Song Cycle: The History of Video Games.  The album features various singers, pianists, arrangers, and lyricists from Materia Collective bringing together some of game music's most influential tracks.

For this one, I tried to capture the additive feeling of minimalist composers (particularly John Adams), relying on short, repetitive phrases to insert chaos into the very orderly and bouncy Chocobo track, a piece that has been arranged dozens of times and that has appeared in at least 20 different games.  Darby Cupit wrote some incredible lyrics that reflect the stuttery nature of the piece while providing insight into the history of the Chocobo.  Doug Perry and Ben Wallace did a fantastic job of bringing the piece to life on the recording as baritone and pianist respectively.  I'm very proud to present this arrangement to everyone!
