Algorhythms & Anthems: Facebook's Underrated Rock Gems 

Then Again is a real nod to early - EARLY! - ToB and the influence Dire Straits had on the band in their our years.

Another song built on a Kevin England guitar riff that perfectly exemplifies the guitarist's 'Knopfler-esque' finger-picking style, the song that would become 'Then Again' was originally born in 1990 and recorded as a demo to 4-track tape the following year. It was performed live throughout 1993 (after Darren Bardoe joined the band in 1992); but, after Bardoe's departure later in '93, the song was as-good-as dropped. The song was completely re-arranged in 1995 (after Russell Parish replaced Bardoe at the very end of 1993); but, again, by the time Bardoe returned, replacing Parrish in 1996, the song had been dropped. However, after ToB's reformation (with Bardoe) in 2015, the song was brought back from the dead by the band's original charismatic front-man. Bardoe completely re-arranged the song (actually making the original Dire Straits influence more obvious!) and added a superb brand new lyric which alludes to the band's reunion and his own place within that, whilst also touching on his rash departure from the band in 1993.

The Bardoe arrangement of this old ToB song was always good enough for release; but, in Keiron Metcalfe's mind, a shortened edit was required. So, with the edit being approved by his bandmates, the full length version will be available in physical form (CD and/or vinyl) in the future.

It was hoped that Darren Bardoe would make (yet another!) comeback in order to sing on this song; but, alas, all things considered, it was not possible to make that plan happen. Consequently, Keiron Metcalfe has attempted to do Darren's re-arrangement justice, both vocally and with his production and mix.

The six-song release begins with “Little Sunshine,” which immediately brings forth a rockin’ beat with a western flair, which is joined by Jake’s powerful vocals. The lyrics, “It wasn’t always this way, Let go my dear, you have nothing to fear,” and “Those were the days, now they’ve vanished in a haze,” and the music both possess an ominous, mysterious tone, which of course pulls you in. I found myself completely intrigued with this track, and my feet tapped to the beat throughout the entire song.
The third track, “That Glow,” is definitely a shining star of the release and where the album name was born. The song features elements of many genres, although rock and folk are at the forefront. The chorus has a poppy beat, and you can’t help but sing along with the repetitive yet entertaining, “I wanna know, I wanna know,  where did you get that glow? where did you get that glow? where did you get that glow? I wanna know, I wanna know, where did you get that glow?.”
I can’t review this release without mentioning “Unwanted Me.” This track shows a completely different side of Jake’s sound, with a punk-rock style to it. On this track, Jake shows the listener that he’s not confining himself to one style or genre and that his talents extend throughout a large scope of styles. I loved this track and would love to see it performed live.
All in all, for a debut EP, I was shocked at the quality and insane talent that is showcased. Each song on this release shows off a different side of Jake’s abilities and sound. Fans of any genre will likely find at least one song they enjoy, so be sure to give it a listen!

Originally written in 1995, I Said Nothing remains virtually unchanged from the original arrangement that was played live in the 90s.

Essentially, the song is about doubt and insecurity, with the lyric (written by the 21-/22-year-old Keiron Metcalfe) being a conversation between the singer and his doubts as he tells himself everything's fine and his doubt telling him he's a fool before he then succumbs to that doubt in the chorus.

The newest ToB song and recording (built off a short demo of Kevin England's from early 2021), Hiding also boasts what is undoubtedly the band's darkest lyric, alluding to feelings of pointlessness, hopelessness, irrelevance and insignificance that can come when one gets older and realises that 'life got in the way' and time slipped by without the hopes and ambitions of younger years coming to pass.

To varying extents, the sentiment expressed in Hiding is something of a recurring theme in Keiron Metcalfe's lyrics. However, whereas older songs might balance the negative aspects of the sentiment with a determined resolve to keep pushing on and/or the sense of there still being time, there is no such 'light at the end of the tunnel' with Hiding, only cold realisation and honest acceptance.
