Time Goes By

It's now 19 years since my original Trance & Bass mix first came out - as a special Mix CD on the cover of Mixmag Magazine. It was definitely an important moment in my career & exposed what I do & how I play to a bigger audience, and also I think a really cool snapshot of what was a really exciting time in DNB, that any of us that are still around will look back on fondly. Big thank you to everyone at Mixmag who helped push the idea of this CD and thought of inviting me to do it, all those years ago!

I've been streaming live DJ sets & working hard on my visuals and general Twitch stuff for over a year now, to get through the 'situation', to the point were we've got over 8000 followers in the 'Loft Crew' (I broadcast these from my loft, as was very obvious in the early days with the strange triangular greenscreen behind me, the shape dictated by the low ceiling and shape of the roof!). 

The computer I use for the streaming is now at its absolute limit of what it can handle so there was a bit of lagging tonight - not up to my usual standard, hopefully the music shines through regardless. I've got a new PC on the way (and looming mammoth credit card bill as a result lol) to use up there, so the resolution/frame rate etc will be back up to 10/10 shortly!

The plan for this set was to revisit the original tracklist and then continue playing tracks along the same lines, some from the same era in the early 2000s that would have fitted in well back then, alongside more recent stuff, all sticking with that 'Trance & Bass' brief.

Huge shout out to all the producers making incredible DNB to this day, whatever the subgenre, and to the guys at the forefront of the Trance & Bass sound back then, and those still pushing it today.

Also a HUGE thank you to everyone that regularly tunes in to my livestreams on Twitch (AKA the #loftcrew), takes part in the community, those that support me with 'subs' and 'bits' tips/donations - it really helps keep me going, both mentally, and financially. You guys really are the best. Thank you.

Here's an unofficial remix I've done of one of my favourite pieces of Dance music history.

I went back and found the original records the Orb sampled so i could rebuild everything from scratch. Made this so I could play it at Sun & Bass 2022 - on the beach - worked perfectly.

If you haven't come across John B in one of his many musical guises over the past decade, where have you been? This British superproducer has gone on to become one of the most eclectic and unique individuals working within electronic music today. Consistently escaping categorization, John's genre-defying catalogue spans the worlds of Electro, Trance and Drum & Bass, and a few other spaces across the bpm spectrum. 

His latest release "Red Sky/Mr. Freud" topped the Beatport DnB charts (& numerous others) & was Mixmag single of the month A unique sound from a real maverick. He's touring the world constantly (just check myspace.com/johnbbeta and you'll see what we mean) and simultaneously running his Beta Recordings & Nu Electro Labels, and writing new material for his next album. 

Glamour for Better are currently the number 2 band in the official Myspace Electro Chart and top ten in both the indie and alternative charts, receiving in excess of 5000 plays a day. 

Architechs of Discotech is the first single to be taken from the album. The video for Architechs of Discotech has been a firm fixture on MTV since November and featured in the MTV/NME chart as a 'hot new one' alongside Foals and Babyshambles. 

What you have here is a HUGE John B Epic D&B remix, with the electro-indie-rock power of Glamour for Better, mashed up with electrohouse bassline energy, massive main room trance synth breakdown and a mighty buildup into a beast of a Drum&Bass crossover anthem...

Strictly doing his own thing since he came into the game at 18; John penned ‘Visions’ as two distinct chapters, both parts grasping two of late 90s drum & bass’s most exciting sounds and pulling them into groundbreaking new directions. 

Part one, ‘Organic’ saw John swerve the standard sample-smashing of the era to create warm, full bodied natural grooves from real musicians. In a stark twist of contrast, part two ‘Synthetic’ foretold both the techstep phenomenon and his own angular, precision electro edge that were to soundtrack our entrance into the new century. One side au natural, one side machine manufactured: both techniques and approaches still dominant in drum & bass today... ‘Visions’ by name, visionary by nature. 

It also comes complete with total remake of his hugely successful Vangelis-inspired ‘Starburst’. Previously constructed on analogue synths, ‘Starburst 2016’ was re-created from the ground up with modern synths and contemporary production. While the scene continues to forage for antiquities, John shows us the other side of the sonic coin once again.   

‘Starburst’ isn’t the only track to enjoy an update: every track you hear on the album has been remastered. The production, however, remains timeless: No one knew how well ‘Visions’ would sound 18 years later. No one knew how well it would document drum & bass’s infant years. Still sounding slick and bursting with creative ideas, the album tells the story of both an artist and a genre growing up, fizzing with directions and ambitions.  

‘Organic’: A maze of mischievous jazz and funk experimentalism. A sharp sense of youthful melody and off-beat surprises await as we spring through the horn-heavy haze of tracks such as ‘Sax Therapy’, ‘Jazz Session’, the purring keys and slap bass of ‘Slamfunk (Moog Remix)’ and sunset soul of ‘Reflections’. The spacious, Orient-focused penultimate track ‘The Second Judgement’ teases for the darkness of what’s set to follow... 

‘Synthetic’: While the first part showcased John’s funkier, soulful musicality, ‘Synthetic’ really established his pedigree as a premiership producer. Forecasting today’s highly technical, synthetic production style you can hear John pushing his machines to their limits, finding new sounds and techniques. The wriggling alien bass of ‘VCF’, the razor-sharp Detroitian electro iciness of ‘Electro Shock’, the iron-fist two-step and sci-fi breakdown of ‘Travelogue’. Not to mention the clear proto techstep dynamics of ‘Sight Beyond’ and ‘Secrets’. Several years ahead of their time, they play a role in one of the most gamechanging chapters in drum & bass. 

No surprises, then, that ‘Visions’ found home in the selections of the most influential DJs at the time - Grooverider, SS, Adam F, Goldie, Photek. It’s here where John dug deep foundations for his fusionist, futurist signature: an amorphous sense of development and narrative, tightly balanced shades and contrasts, well-chiselled breaks and sharp synthesis.  

Every genre has its small selection of pivotal albums that show clear signs of progression, influence and documentation and brand new benchmarks: ‘Visions’ is an album that lives up to its name in ways John never could have imagined at the time. The future is now...

Here it is! My 'Alternative' Set from La Cinta Beach at Sun & Bass 2018! 

Previously I've played more niche Italo Disco stuff at sun & bass for my 'alternative' sets so I thought it would be good to switch it up and not duplicate what I'd done previously - so this time I decided to go all out megahits from the 80s & 90s for a proper beach party vibe, then work in some of the D&B remixes of 80s stuff I've amassed over the years to bring the energy up at the end!  

Words can't describe how much fun it was and how happy I was with how it went! This was my first day at S&B this year and what a great start to the week! Big Love to everyone that was there and shared the occasion - if you couldn't be there I hope this recording brings you a bit of that San Teodoro sunshine!
