Ending the year on a high having witnessed a plethora of musical highlights, Meanwhile has been a shining beacon for progressive house throughout 2021. Now, Australian, Mike Rish, becomes the latest debutant to showcase his talents on GMJ & Matter’s blossoming imprint with the 3-track “Beyond” EP.

From his home on Australia’s south-eastern coast, Mike Rish has witnessed an impressive rise to notoriety, courtesy of a clutch of high-profile releases on an exclusive set of blue-chip labels. Not wanting to flood the progressive house scene with a swathe of formulaic dance music, the Melbourne resident’s “selective output” is based on a carefully thought-out commitment to “keep people engaged, but also wanting more”. Thus, Rish’s work for the likes of Colorize, Serendeep and Juicebox Music, has seen the Australian carve out a sizeable niche for himself, further enhanced by March 2021’s 12-track “Interlinked” album for UGENIUS Music.

Opening his Meanwhile account with the “Beyond” title track, a chunky beat and cavernous bass groove sit tightly against off-beat hats and snare. Filtering into sonic range, an elegant arpeggio provides glorious melodic interplay as white-noise washes and meandering pads pulse gently across the near 10-minute piece. Full of spine-tingling atmosphere, additional melodic phrasing is introduced at the breakdown before extending into the third movement with ease, combined with a raft of effects and masterful touches.

A bouncing bass groove immediately finds “Mindgame” oozing with hypnotic force and low-end menace. Sat perfectly in between deep kick and ticking hats, a flowing melodic line ripples across proceedings as it rises and falls with filtered dynamism. Twisted vocal cuts and acetylene-edged synth effects pitch with glissando range adding to the aural collage in a track full of dark and mesmerising beauty.

Closing the EP, “Here For You” is characterised by an intricate percussive arrangement that introduces a subtle melodic backdrop. Effects and textured pads span the stereo stage in modulated glory as a pulsating lead melody enters the fray in the second movement. Building steadily before revealing itself fully in the stripped back breakdown, the second half blossoms in commanding fashion with a pulsating confluence of rhythm and melody. The result is a track that illustrates Mike Rish’s unique talent and technique.

A musical triptych full of innovation and sonic narrative, Mike Rish has gone above and “Beyond” with a glittering display of production prowess.

The incongruent sound of off-kilter percussive clicking ripples through melodic brilliance – Dan Sieg returns to a well-travelled Mango Alley, "Something's Not Clicking Right" creates a new aural pathway. Glorious sonic variation burns incandescent, the colour of fire bleeding through in abstract patterns against the clean angular white lines of metronomic beat, white-noise shaker and steam-powered effects. Motion-blur revealed in vivid shades and textured nuance.

A returning iconic figure generates a frisson of drama; an expectant audience filled with eager anticipation. Quivver makes his mark once again, firing with accustomed precision. Clarity of purpose and unrivalled techno credentials create an aural landscape of monochromatic beauty. Brilliant patterns coalesce from a trinity of distortion, reverb and delay as they pan across the stereo spectrum in dizzying glory. The infinite shades between black and white swirl in patterns and a bedrock of four/four beat is juxtaposed against freeform melodic interpretation that reaches its zenith before exploding in wall of mesmerising sound.

Australian flair combines with sonic beauty as Luka Sambe creates a new pulsating soundscape. Taking centre stage, a stellar cast of pulsating rhythmic components and flowing melodic creativity converge in a new narrative. Percussive vectors align themselves in clean, sharp lines creating a chessboard pattern from where an infinite array of patterns emerge from rippling keys and searing regal synths. Arpeggios dance lightly, comprised of complex, ever-evolving tessellations that refer to themes resonant where something is clearly right.

Different shades of white create a new world of light; they illuminate and elucidate in tales that ignite.

From the beautiful south of France comes Ceas, a passionate producer that, surprisingly, didn't start his creative career on the computer. 
Ceas has played a variety of musical instruments since he was a child. Influenced by artists like Stephan Bodzin and Christian Löffler, among many others, it is quite natural that he then began to compose electronic music himself. 
With we need cracks, Ceas realized his first creations, the duo was welcome soil for his art to flourish. Now that we need cracks continue in different directions, Ceas gathered the focus to continue on his own with releases on anjunadeep and inner symphony.

Berlin based producer and live artist Ben Böhmer has risen through the Anjunadeep ranks to become a breakout star of the past 18 months, amassing almost 40 million streams, picking up BBC Radio 1 support from Annie Mac and Pete Tong, including an ‘Essential New Tune’, and being featured in Billboard’s ‘Ones To Watch’. 

In addition to running his own fledgling label Tön Töpferei, Ben has put out singles on Anjunadeep and acclaimed remixes for Monolink and Jan Blomqvist, both of whom now feature on Ben’s debut LP.

Ben’s early releases on tastemaker labels Bade and Keller drew comparison to revered producers Recondite and Francesco Tristano - dark tracks dotted with classical influence, featuring haunting piano lines and discordant strings. Not long afterwards, Ben lost a close family member, and both his life and his music changed course. 

Whilst overcoming this loss, Ben found solace in music. 

The moody and reflective sounds of Ben’s early work made way for brighter and more melodic music, keeping the depth and texture, but changing the tone from darkness to light. Finding a sense of hope and optimism in uplifting emotions and euphoric melodies, Ben's debut album ‘Breathing’ marks the closing of a chapter in Ben’s life, the culmination of a period of heartache and recovery, and a coming of age as an artist.  

Opening track ‘In Memoriam’ is an emotive tribute, blending powerful strings with stirring vocal samples. Title track and lead single ‘Breathing’ with collaborators Nils Hoffmann and Malou follows. A long-awaited highlight in Ben’s live shows over the past year, 'Breathing' layers Malou’s delicate voice above swung percussion and hard-hitting synths.

An avid collaborator, Ben is also joined on the album by two further breakout German stars, vocalist Monolink who features on ‘Black Hole’ and multi-instrumentalist Jan Blomqvist who lends his vocals to ‘Decade’. 

Through the album Ben explores a range of emotions, from the hopeful ‘Hunting’ with Jonah, to energetic instrumental ‘Maelstrom’ through to the hard-hitting ‘Wall Of Strings, which samples The Cinematic Orchestra. 

Following the release of the album in November, Ben will be taking his live show on an extensive world tour - dates and information to be revealed in the coming months.

‘Breathing’ is available to pre-order now, digitally, on CD and on limited edition 2x12” white vinyl, due for release 22 November 2019.

When Andreas from Amselcom asked me to produce an album, he already heard Péndulos and Chrystal from my Live Set on Tepeme Musica. When Pol Balam invited me to release a podcast, I wanted to send him my first Live composed with pure unreleased tracks, among them is Péndulos and Chrystal.

I started to work on the Ep that Andreas asked me for Amselcom, I wanted to send him something very special and after that excitement NåmiNåmi was born. I wanted to present something different to my usual production: new ideas and new rules. It is difficult for me to describe this, but this track represents a lot of my inner world.

Andreas showed me the artwork of Ana Férias, I loved the design, the colors and the structure itself. It fits perfectly with the Music, thank you Ana.
