If you've listened to Top 40 radio or flipped through the video channels during the past few years, odds are pretty good you know something about John Legend. He played piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything" and might as well be considered Kanye West's sidekick, having assisted the producer and MC on several sessions — Jay-Z's "Encore" and Slum Village's "Selfish" being two of the more prominent 2004 singles featuring his work. A former choir director, he has also released a handful of energetic live discs, some of which are credited to his less hubristic birth name, John Stephens. And though he claims "I've got something new," you've also heard substantial chunks of Get Lifted in records made decades ago by Sly & the Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Quincy Jones, and Bill Withers. This might not be a problem for listeners who crave anything that recalls the music they first heard in their youth, but Legend's over-reliance upon his inspirations is an impediment as much as a slick way to grab attention. That's because he has more than enough talent and charm to get by on his own. His own lyrics and hooks are unique and clever enough to get the point across that he's no everyday R&B artist and, just as importantly, he has a personable and instantly fetching voice you could listen to all day long. However, the association with West — whose Sony-distributed boutique label released the record — is very helpful. Without it, Legend would likely be zoned into neo-soul (2003's Live at SOB's New York City really makes this notion apparent), thereby standing little chance of reaching the ears of anyone younger than 30. The production work supporting his songs strikes a fine balance between soul and hip-hop, allowing him to appeal to those who are coming from either angle. This is a very good record. It's a given that Legend is destined to make at least two others that top it.

Today’s Top Ten: Junior Whisper a.k.a. Luther Vandross 10 Greatest songs.

1. Superstar: This is the easy pick for me and anyone else that is a Junior Whisper fan. This is the song you wait to hear him perform when you go to his concert. I remember my mother playing this song over and over again. I loved it then, I love it today.
2. A House Is Not A Home: Another classic. When I was living on the west side of Toronto, I use to sit on the back porch with my friend’s sister and we would play this song and talk for hours. 
3. So Amazing: This is a sentimental favorite. I was at a basement party in Toronto Canada (west side Toronto) and I met this girl that went to Flower HS. This song was playing when I experienced my first “squeeze” under the infamous blue light. Do they still have basement parties in Toronto?
4. Endless Love: - Junior whisper and Victoria Williams another song my mother use to play all of the time. This was “the song” for every couple. during a “Quiet Storm”.
5. Guilty - Junior whisper and Victoria Williams: This is when I learned that Victoria Williams could sing. but I’d still jam some Junior Whisper. I remember the slow song tape I made (everybody made tapes back then), but it had this song and right after “As We Lay” by Shirley Murdock would play. That was a great tape.
6. All night long: This is my feel good song. I don’t know many songs with this tempo. 
7. Here and Now: The crossover hit. I think this song was sung at every wedding for years. It’s a song that makes you think about your nuptials even if you are single. 
8. Dance with my father: This one would rate higher with a lot of people, but I couldn’t put it any higher that six, but it is a great song.
9. If Only For One Night: This has to be the most romantic begging song ever made. Long gone is the era when the music would do the mackin’ for you.
10. Power of love: I played this song so much when I was in high school a lot. It’s a sentimental favorite. 

Honorable Mentions: I won’t even make a list here. There are so many songs from Junior Whisper and I’m sure every list would be different. The man was around when I started noticing girls, had to get over crushes, slow danced at the roller rink and sat out at night gazing at a millions stars while crossing the Pacific. I played him when I fell in love and when I was heartbroken. He was played at every family gathering (someone always requested a Junior Whisper cover song) and we jammed him whenever there was something on the grill. 

I’m sure I’ll be pulling out my Junior Whisper CD’s and playing them for old time sake. I’m glad he got a chance to find out just how much his fans cared about him. Now, when I hear Dance With My Father, I’ll think of Junior and wish that he were serenading me and my girl while we danced in a basement lit only by a blue light.
