Display Resolution #67 W: John Loveless

Having been extensively road-tested this past year by DJs including Daniel Avery, HAAi and Gerd Janson, Highdive arrives with tangible anticipation. The work of less-than-shadowy figures Gramrcy and John Loveless, the pair have passed lockdown and beyond remixing artists such as WH Lung, Discovery Zone and Ghost Culture. Debuting their first original material, closely following Gramrcy’s recent appearance on Loveless’s own Hot Concept imprint, Highdive is a long anticipated explosion of energy.

Built around a sonic-boom breakdown, glossy rave chords and pounding post-punk drums, Highdive feels immediately at home on Phantasy. Having worked closely alongside founder Erol Alkan in recent years to shape the imprint's diverse output, Loveless' collaboration with the Peach Discs founder nods to the electro landscape of the label's earliest days.

Having never left dance floors since, Gramrcy & John Loveless take a golden opportunity to plunge dancers into the sublime and the ridiculous.
While a stripped-down ‘Beats Mix’ sees the pair adopt a less-maximal approach, leave it to Schacke to stretch Highdive into hardcore rave heaven. The already-influential Copenhagen artist underscores his refreshing funk in the ‘fast-techno’ scene through which he has risen, turning the screws and upping the tempo with intense but elastic results.

Digital artwork is kindly reproduced with permission of wildlife photographer Alan MacFayden, portraying a Kingfisher diving into the River Dee, Scotland. McFayden estimates the shot took around six years, or 720,000 attempts, to capture precisely.

Display Resolution #90 w/ John Loveless

On this weeks episode of the FMB mixtape, we welcome John Loveless, a DJ, producer and writer from the North West of the UK. He runs his own Hot Concept imprint and party series, and works with Palms Trax on CWPT. His radio residencies on Refuge Worldwide and Cashmere Radio allow him to explore electronic and alternative music. Let catch up with John Loveless..

"I’ve been trying to evade my allergies and enjoy the sensory pleasures of spring’s arrival in Berlin. Listening to music, reading in the sun and of course, trying to play it cool about recording this mix…

The mix was recorded live, in one hot take, on CDJs and a Pioneer mixer at my friend Charlie’s.

As alluded to above, I’d check the original Feel My Bicep blog for new downloads pretty obsessively, circa 2010. I even made it to the first ever Bicep DJ gig in Manchester, which I recall was cut heartbreakingly short by a fire alarm (without a subsequent fire). The music featured was a much-appreciated introduction to a particular strain of dance music, especially house and Italo, driven by charisma and odd hooks. I’m still drawn to those kinds of records and that admittedly nebulous attitude, regardless of era or genre, so I used those instincts to record something with the sort of progression and pace that my daft 21 year-old self might have enjoyed.

The final track here – a Leftside Wobble bootleg of an exciting little band called The Beatles – even initially came to me via FMB, but I don’t think I’ve ever used it in a mix or even on the radio, so this felt like as good of an opportunity as any to exorcise it after all these years. Some other tracks in here are ‘personal classic’ trax that I know like the back of my hand, while others, like Peach’s remix of Cromby, landed in my inbox a couple of hours before I recorded and just felt right for the flow.


I’m currently in the process of finishing up some new tracks and remixes with my production partner Gramrcy, one of which features here for the first time here. These should arrive later in 2025. I have a remix with Palms Trax on the horizon, and I’m soon to reach the 100th edition of my show ‘Display Resolution’ on Cashmere Radio, after which I’ll put the show on ice or an irregular schedule for some time. I’m hoping to record a mixed compilation of sorts to celebrate, so have progressed to agonising over the track list for that one instead. I have some exciting gigs upcoming this summer, such as a nice long stretch outdoors at ELSE in Berlin for the CWPT party, and Pikes in Ibiza for the first time.

I’ve also written a full-length feature screenplay with my mate Rich, AKA, DJ Enchanted Rhythms, which we’re still chipping away on, draft after draft. I have been involved in music for a long time now, but film is a similar passion, and this has felt like the most exciting and fulfilling work I’ve undertaken lately. While I wait for A24 to call, I’ve decided to more frequently update my substack, No Fun At The Fair, and have an essay to publish soon on a strawberry theme park, and another on outdoor swimming pools, if that’s your sort of thing. With the November edition of Display Resolution coinciding with the DICE Festival & Conference (including workshops, panels, lectures and live performances highlighting female, trans, and non-binary artists and speakers), John Loveless is joined by Avril Ceballos, founder of forward-thinking booking agency, Futura Artists, and label manager of legendary offbeat dance imprint, Comeme.  

Nobly transcending the hustle and bustle of several hundred people exiting a Planningtorock gig, Avril reflects on the foundations and philosophy of the agency, representation in the modern underground scene and the importance of established artists as well as what's bubbling up. 

John mispronounces names and forgets to take a photo, but blends a bumper edition of upcoming, recent and distant dance and alternative music, entirely written, produced or performed by femme-identifying artists. Tracklist below!

Display Resolution #24 with Daniel Avery & John Loveless

This month’s 42nd edition of my radio show, Display Resolution, is entirely focused on the heritage of black club music from the United States, either featuring black artists or in earnest appreciation thereof. I’m far, far from the most relevant voice on this history or the labyrinthian scenes within, but so much black dance music, especially Chicago house, disco and NYC techno has resonated with me and provided much escape since my teens, both in and out of clubs. The legacy and painful background in which this music has been created is not a fresh revelation, but has been on my mind more than ever in recent weeks. So, with respect and some very raw EQ-ing, this is my very minor tribute, recorded live on a stuffy afternoon in Berlin, June 2020. Some of the records in this mix are classics, arguably overplayed but irresistible, some I only got recently and others I’ve never even had the good fortune to hear in a club. Nonetheless, I love all of them and, at least to my ear, they embody something forward or even radical in terms of freedom, hope, vulnerability and pleasure, whether from 1980 or 2020.

John Loveless is a DJ and writer, hailing from the North-West of England and based in Berlin, founder of Hot Concept, a series of parties and a digital label. Resident on Cashmere Radio and a creative force at Phantasy Sound.

Impulsively fascinated by music and culture since his teenage years, John Loveless has quietly earned a reputation as one of electronic music’s most devoted and unlikely characters. A sonically malleable club obsessive, Loveless is founder and resident DJ at the party and label Hot Concept, as well as a regular fixture at underground Berlin events such as Weeeirdos and Power Play. He has performed at clubs across Europe including The Warehouse Project, Ohm, XOYO, Soup Kitchen, Golden Pudel and The White Hotel, as well as the Manchester International Festival.

Initially founded in 2018 as a party series, Loveless’s label Hot Concept has quickly earned acclaim in fostering a community of independent minded but radically different artists. Each connected by leftfield perspectives on electronic music, it’s quickly expanding discography has included singles and albums courtesy of Bleaching Agent, Beigean, Pokies and Yr Lovely Dead Moon. 

Hot Concept also hosted Loveless’s first remix production, a collaboration with Gramrcy under the guise of ‘Gramrcy & Loveless’, providing an extension of Discovery Zone’s ‘Dance II’ in the generous mould of Francois K or Shep Pettibone. The pair continue to collaborate in similar spirit but always diverse sounds, providing thoughtful and floor-ready reworks for Ghost Culture, Galaxians and Shanti Celeste.

Since 2014, Loveless has been an increasingly influential creative force within Phantasy Sound, the London-based record label founded by Erol Alkan. In 2020, Loveless curated and mixed ‘A Psychedelic Sensibility’, a special mix and collection revisiting the label’s back catalogue as it approached 100 single releases. The release was reviewed as ‘Compilation of The Month’ in Groove Magazine, and featured as ‘Compilation of The Week’ on BBC Radio 6 Music.

Loveless has also presented one of the longest-running shows on Berlin’s community focused Cashmere Radio, ‘Display Resolution’. True to his open-minded musical endeavours, each show features forward-thinking selections, reissues and unexpected finds, as well as guest DJ sets and live performances from friends, allies and influences such as Daniel Avery, Justin Strauss, Josh Cheon, Fred P, Cormac, Karen Gwyer, African Acid is The Future and more.

As a writer and music journalist under the guise of ‘John Thorp’, John has written extensively about electronic music for a number of publications over the past decade, including The Guardian, Bandcamp, Mixmag and Beatportal. He maintains a long-form artist interview series, ‘The Forum’, for Phantasy Sound.
