Make two minutes of loopable background music. The music will be inspired by a phrase from William Gibson’s novel The Peripheral - “The ambient sound was glum as the light, as calculated to unsettle.” 
Think about music that is suitable to reading. 

Little bit of viola and monotribe synth into reverb, delay and octave pedals. Very much thought about the 'suitable for reading element' to the project this week - not much in the way of development throughout - just a couple of steady tones pitching down a touch then back with the occasional 'faulty fluorescent' squeal...

The Light In Her Voice Mail  Disquiet0148-Peripherallistening

I recently read a piece (it may have been from 'this week in sound') on the back of the movie The Martian, which spoke about the noises in space. I had in mind a lone pilot out on a mission with the drones and clanks of his ship constantly around him, trying to drown out the sounds with memories of home. Eventually he gives up, returning to the drones.

A few different bass-heavy synth lines layered with a couple of risset drum hits from Audacity along with recordings of rain and crickets sourced from Freesound.org

The monthly picture for October is a painting by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo called "Girotondo."

Rules:

1) Create an "ORIGINAL" music/sound track close to the fields of Electronic Ambient (Dark, chilled, drone, glitch, etc...), Experimental, Classical (please no Dj mix).
2) Inspire your composing to the picture shown at the top of the group monthly.
3) Download that picture and use it as the icon of your track when post it. You can choose any title you like but please write [Extrospection - month+year] beside.
4) Track must be between 3 and 6 minutes lenght.
5) Tick the "creative common licence" when post it.
6) Upload your piece by the end of the month. All the tracks after that limits won't be moderated.
7) Copy and paste this few lines, beside your track, during your uploading:

All Fall Down (Extrospection - October 2015)

Working with spoken word (any kind of vocal really) isn't really something that I enjoy - normally I don't participate in projects with that as a theme, but it is No. 200 so I had a go this time. 
I 'Luciered' the recording of the author by playing it through a reverb pedal with 100% wet signal, recording the result then repeating about half a dozen times. Around the halfway point of the track I added a bassy-drone  by taking the word 'peace' from the original recording which I stretched, reverbed and filtered. (and I added a viola drone because I just can't help myself)

That Dragged - Disquiet0209 - Journal2015

Did a tiny cheat here - the fox was barking away at about 2am so not exactly midnight but it was a touch more dramatic than the midnight recording which was just the sound of snow falling - ie. nothing much at all. The transition noise is something that I recorded a couple of years ago and have used in several tracks to signify a transition between spaces. Funnily enough it was christened 'Transition Thump'. I've no idea how I recorded it. And yes. I was watching snooker at midnight on a Saturday night.

The metallic industrial feel to Matthew McVickar's Tiny Rhythm track from last week's task (https://soundcloud.com/matthewmcvickar/disquiet0215-tinyrhythms) sounded like it would sit well with the pedal-affected drones that I like to scrape out of the viola. I also added a synth line to underpin the whole piece.

I had a bunch of samples of skipping records and various odds and ends of recordings. I used the dice to choose which sample to set up next, the length of it and the effects or filters to put it through. And, being me I couldn't not underpin it with some kind of scraping drone...
