Arthur McBride is a traditional Irish anti-recruitment ballad, likely originating in the early 19th century during the Napoleonic Wars. It recounts the story of Arthur McBride and his cousin who, while walking by the sea on Christmas morning, are approached by British recruiting officers offering gold and promises of glory. The young men reject the offer, citing the dangers of war and the likelihood of being sent to France to die. When insulted and threatened by the soldiers, they retaliate with their shilleleighs, beat the recruiters soundly, and toss their weapons—and the drummer’s drum—into the tide. The song’s satirical tone and vivid imagery reflect Irish resistance to British military conscription.
