The Evil That MEN Do presents the life of everyman as the result of gradual colonisation by society and its institutions. Parents, school, religion, politics, ideology, and media act as repeated conditioning forces, slowly “pickling” the mind through daily reinforcement of rules, beliefs, fears, and expectations. What begins as innocence — the fairytale of unbroken perception — is gradually split in two, as trusted figures, the “scalliwags,” pass on distortions they themselves inherited. These influences form the shadow self, an internalised structure of doubt, guilt, and misinterpretation that shapes how reality is seen.

As the shadow grows stronger, perception regresses and clarity becomes harder to reach. The individual struggles against this inner force, but the fight is unequal because the shadow is built from years of conditioning by powerful external systems. The “broken key” represents the loss of direct understanding, the inability to unlock life’s meaning after being shaped by repeated social, moral, and ideological pressures. Life then feels like a stage, a tragic play in which the person acts out roles formed by forces beyond their control, while the original innocence remains only as a memory of what once seemed whole.

Ultimately, the work reveals that this struggle is not personal but universal. Every person is shaped by the same structures and becomes both a product and a transmitter of them, passing the same conditioning to the next generation. The church, the school, the red and the blue, and all other systems ensure that the cycle continues, so the shadow lives on in every mind. In this sense, everyman becomes an expression of human ontology itself, showing that the tragedy lies in the nature of human existence within society. The evil that men do is not only individual wrongdoing, but the enduring pattern of influence, distortion, and repetition that persists across lives, across generations, and across the whole of humanity.
