This would be a good place to start fading the track out to end around the next 4 bars or so.

This track is the result of a partnership between Joe Watkins and Johnnie Walker (a.k.a Jack) who met in an office at Oakfield Road in Bristol in the mid-1990's.

They called their collaborative efforts 'Jojack'.

Joe Watkins provided some samples and Johnnie Walker laid them on top of a midi composition of synth sounds using Cubase VST. Joe also did some scratching which Johnnie recorded and chopped up.

This track is been edited down from a much longer version which had quite a lot more at the beginning. Keep 'em wanting more eh?

This was one of the first tracks that Johnnie Walker made using audio files. He had previously been using Cubasis which had no audio tracks (only MIDI). 

He created the original synth melodies with MIDI rendered by Soundblaster Soundcard synth  but hankered for something a bit more dirty. So, Johnnie messed with a demo version of Propellerhead's Rebirth to get the dirtier 303 anaolgue sound. Interestingly, because it was a demo version (which came off Future Music magazine), it was not possible to save one's work and the programme was designed to stop working after 30 minutes without saving the song.

This timing constraint was wonderful because it forced him to plan the sounds that he wanted it to make and concoct a strategy on how to get to it fast. During a few attempts he filled in the notes only to have the software freeze just before he had got the target sound. This meant he had to restart the software and go right back to the beginning again. In the end he set up a cassette recorder to record the whole session.

The whisting screetch, I think, came from some AM radio interference which was then pushed through a filter.

The tune was recorded onto tape cassette.

On April 20th 2014 it was played on a Marantz Cassette Deck SD4050 to transfer onto PC via a cheap soundcard. Dolby was turned off. Tape speed was 'normal'.

The recorded version was the first track on a tape labelled "Dnb -  TECHNOLOGY Plus any answers will Clinton Attack Iraq".

Track 1 was followed by track 2, another version of the song which got cut short and over-recorded by an episode of Radio 4's Any Answers programme which involved a discussion about whether Bill Clinton should attack Iraq.

Surgeon - Minirig Mix

This is a song that I made in the mid-1990's. I cannot remember exactly when. 

It is named as 'Two Soft Night' because it derived from a previous song which I had named 'Soft Night'.

It was one of the first tunes that I made with Cubase VST. 

I think the twangy analogue sound came from a Roland JV-1080.

I quite like this, although I think it could have done with some better equalisation. The treble is a little too penetrating in some places.

05 - Money Feat. Barbara

I wrote this track in around 1998 or 1999.  It was inspired by the forthcoming solar eclipse of 1999. 

Of all my songs it is one of the best in terms of production quality. However, making it did not give me much satisfaction. This is because it was a bit too easy. Most of the sounds come from the sample CD called Jungle Warfare Vol 3 (which I bought at great expense). All I did was cut and paste the samples together, add some minor effects and cut some holes into it.

So, it was a lesson - if you steal other people's work you get very good results, very quickly.
