A rainforest dawn chorus from Fraser's Hill, Malaysia. Including Fire-tufted Barbet, Red-headed Trogon, Siamang Gibbon and many more species that I didn't manage to identify! Recorded from an east-facing overlook on Jalan Richmond on April 3rd, 2014, using a Sony PCM-D50.

Recorded around sunrise (07:57GMT) on the 28th January 2023 in an area of broadleaf woodland on the banks of Fernworthy Reservoir, Dartmoor National Park. Included in this soundscape are Herring Gull, Woodpigeon, Teal, Canada Goose, Carrion Crow, Raven, Blackbird, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Marsh Tit, Nuthatch, Chaffinch, Crossbill and Great-spotted Woodpecker.

Equipment used: 2 x Audio-Technica AT4022 omnidirectional microphones in an Olson half-sphere array (https://www.trackseventeen.com/mic_rigs.html) and a Sound Devices MixPre-3.

Fernworthy Reservoir - 28/01/2023

The pre-dawn sounds of a remote mire in Dartmoor National Park. Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) are performing their "winnowing" courtship display, flying up and diving downwards so their tail feathers vibrate with a distinctive thrumming sound. A Redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus) sings loudly from a nearby bush.

An hour before sunrise in a secluded valley mire in Dartmoor National Park. Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) are performing their "winnowing" courtship display, flying up and diving downwards so their tail feathers vibrate with a distinctive thrumming sound. Tawny Owls and Cuckoo call across the valley.

May Day Snipe

Mourning doves are singing a beautiful duet, common nighthawks are calling while in flight above and field crickets are chirping among the juniper and bunch grasses.

Mourning Dove Duet

Deep in an abandoned quarry, sheltered from the wind blowing across the open moors, toads croak in a pool as water drips from the surrounding trees.

Recorded on the 17th February, 2024 with a Zoom F3 and an ORTF pair of Rode NT1As.

Foggy Morning in the Quarry

Recorded in N. Central Oregon near Highway 218 between towns of Clarno and Fossil.
Low frequency sound around 75 Hz
Recurring on and off all morning, for duration's up to an hour. 
Three syllable call repeating approximately every 10 to 20 seconds.
Suspect wild turkey, though I am not finding this call on the web.

A Monaural recording made with homemade parabolic microphone in Pinnacles National Monument in California.  This Steller's Jay was a complete surprise for me as I've never heard these vocalizations from one before.  I followed the bird at close range as it casually browsed on the large limbs of a Sycamore , not the least bothered by my presence. It's songs went on continuously  for almost a minute at a time.  I quit after about 5 minutes of recording.  There was a lot more variety than what is heard here but much of the recording is obscured by wind and stream noise down in the narrow canyon.

I am a 66 year old retired automotive technician and am now pursuing my passions as an amateur naturalist. I travel extensively fly fishing,birding,and most recently sound recording. Primarily I'm recording natural soundscapes and also individual bird vocalizations.  I've participated in workshops given by The Macaulay Library of The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and The Nature Sound Society.  I build most of my sound recording equipment and am in the process of learning to better handle and share my recordings through the internet-thus SoundCloud.
