Leonard Rossiter (in the UK version) stars in this improbably hilarious sitcom where his dreams of creating a time-machine come true and he takes his unique brand of misanthropy throughout the ages whilst forever failing to win the heart of some of history's most famous ladies.

"This was never aired in the UK but I have a friend who knew someone who was involved in commissioning for NBC in the 70s and 80s and he could remember this show. She recalls it was a straight-up sitcom but tackled such serious themes that the American audience could never really place it, and it was pulled after four episodes.

In the 1973 pilot episode, 'The N-Word', Abner Able was a keen Klan member and Georgia State Trooper vacationing in Chicago when he was a victim of a common street robbery, resulting in the death of the [black] assailant. Assigned to his case was a tough, African-American homicide cop, Franklin Willing and, through a confluence of circumstances, the two were reluctantly obliged to partner up. In episode four, the two were working undercover to nail a narcotics gang using the Black Panther Movement as a front. Able was obliged to 'black up' to infiltrate the gang but during a stakeout was ironically savagely beaten by a Klan cell.

My friend said the show was OK and probably ahead of its time. F. Jermain King, who played Det Sgt Willing, said he was aiming for somewhere between Frank Drebin and Popeye Doyle. There was talk of ABC reprising the series in 1981 when it was thought audiences would be more receptive but that never happened."

1973 Anglia Television. A Blyton-esque romp featuring a nine-strong troop of girls aged between 5 and 12 on a prolonged school trip to London (It lasted two years!). Sally Thomsett (23 at the time but playing a 12 year old - Jemmy) naturally led the group with a very young Patsy Kensit in an early role as Quimp, hot on the heels of a Birds Eye frozen peas advert. The gang uncovered and, ingeniously, apprehended gangs of organised criminals responsible for such high-level scams as replacing all the steel cutlery in the girl's' hotel with inferior quality ones or skimming washing powder (again in the hotel) to sell on door to door.
