'Source Code, brings together live, improvised violin with custom designed software designed to dialogue with it.

Johnny Chang, a veteran of the Berlin experimental music scene, collaborates with Luke Munn, writer and coder. Their work plays with and against the algorithm, exploring the possibility space of the machine as a third agent. Borrowing from different disciplines, they combine references to Western classical repertoire with newer production techniques like granular synthesis. 

The result is a trio of pieces that range from haunting, siren-like sounds, to frenetic loops, chopped samples, and delicate layers.

Viola Torros Project: Plausible Melodies (3)

Inspired by a 22-hour radio piece of Christina Ertl-Shirley, in which she  sonifies the biological processes of a half-felled corkscrew willow at her garden plot in Oranienburg, in the process also capturing the sounds of its inhabitants and environment. 

Heard here is the first part of an ongoing long-distance collaboration with collected field recordings from the Hibiscus Coast interwoven with the Berlin urban & rural environments.

In the gentlest and least signposted of ‘city symphonies’, albeit one which transfigures the field recording toward the overheard musicality of the everyday, Berlin based composer Johnny Chang takes us on an extended soundwalk around the changed urbanscape of his Taiwan childhood. As Johnny says of the piece:

“Field recordings captured in Taiwan, from immediate vicinity of childhood home in the city to the countryside.

(in order of appearance) :

Street market vendors chatter and canned pop music punctuate.

Traffic sounds originate from the intersection directly at the corner of my family home – pretty much a constant background sound.

Ebb and flow of Kaohsiung city.

Repetition of life – signified by various type of drones surrounding us.”

Butterfly Voicing Study

Composer-performer JOHNNY CHANG engages in extended explorations surrounding the relationships of sound/listening and the in-between areas of improvisation, composition and performance. Based in Berlin for more than 10 years, Chang relocated to his home country,  New Zealand in 2020.

Johnny is part of the Wandelweiser composers collective and in 2018, initiated a new framework for the presentation of creative research and performances, "Partitions & Resonances", aimed at encouraging collaborations between the varied disciplines of composition, musicology, historical research and performance.  Since early 2021, “Partitions & Resonances” has taken the form of a monthly listening series of compositions by Wandelweiser and related composers/artists/sound artists hosted by Audio Foundation, Auckland.

He currently collaborates with: Peter Ablinger, Jürg Frey, Antoine Beuger, Sam Dunscombe, Keir GoGwilt, Catherine Lamb, Klaus Lang, Mike Majkowski, Phill Niblock, Michael Pisaro, Derek Shirley, Germaine Sijstermans, Taku Sugimoto, Eric Wong.

As composer and performer, his articulated performances have been featured in: Staatsoper/ OperaLab//DAAD Mikromusik/MaerzMusik (Berlin), Donaueschingen Musiktage, Edition Festival (Stockholm), Sonic Acts Festival/Muziekgebouw (Amsterdam), Gaudeamus (Utrecht), Cafe OTO (London), Riverrun Festival (Albi), Q-O2 workspace (Brussels), Wandelweiser Klangraum (Düsseldorf), Minimal Jukebox (Los Angeles Philharmonic), Audio Foundation/Pyramid Club (NZ).
