Written in one fell swoop at the Starbucks coffee shop in Davis Square, Somerville, MA.  The inspiration was...well, listen to the song.

This song started out with some writing about my own family, some things I wished I'd had growing up -- a safe place to be myself and to make music.  But, as songs do sometimes, it morphed into a prayer to a universal mother figure, in this case, Mary.  I like the contrast between muddy streets and solid ground in the chorus.

Mama

A melancholy but hopeful song about loss and new beginnings.

Written on a visit to visit my dear friend Jonathan in Pittsburgh in 2008.  Was going thorough a rough break up.  I like the self-revealing vulnerability of the chorus.

John is a songwriter, singer and guitar teacher, based in Washington, DC.  He performs as a solo act and also with the Americana trio, After the Flood.  He teaches guitar and ukulele at Middle C Music in the Tenleytown neighborhood of Washington.  

John's music has been described as songs for "sinners and everyday angels," drawing deeply on the folk traditions of storytelling and social justice, with soulful melodic turns and surprising wit.
