when you wake up, morning
kettle on, still yawning
cat rubs leg, it’s purring
juice maker, it’s whirring
coffee needed, full roast
marmalade on thick toast
start to reboot your brain
as you head for the train

so at first all seems fine
not rain but sunny shine
then look at their faces
vacant eyes, blank spaces
see you and look away
their façade coloured grey
maybe some hope inside
but to the world denied

you get told what you need
plant a tree, not a seed
but as soon as it’s bought
you need a new one is what you’re taught
why do we live this way

why not escape the flock
with those who are woke, the ones the dailies mock

so the way things are going
leaves us no way of knowing
who we should be following

telling you life’s appalling
