Shauna Lee Lange Explains The Power Of Decentralization And Mental Model For The Metaverse

Founder at Spatial8 and Co-Founder at Exthereal graced our community with his presence in yet another spectacular episode full of meaningful conversations about Web3 culture and how these new technologies help communities and industries. Joh Orengo is determined to build ecosystems and communities and interested in how emerging technologies (XR, Blockchain, AI, IoT...) are coming together to develop the metaverse and spatial computing.

As Founder of Spatial8, he helps bring emerging technology companies and ecosystems around the metaverse and spatial computing in Europe closer together to enhance education in the market, improve business, and facilitate innovation. He is also the co-producer of the newscast, Spatial News™, and the contributor and editor of the SpatialNews newsletter.

Joh has always been interested in the startup scene and business ecosystems ever since 2018. Although he used to be a teacher who taught English at the university, he wanted something different, more challenging. This desire pushed him to join a talent accelerator in Helsinki called Shortcut: which introduced people looking for work in the tech startup scene.

"I kept hearing startup ecosystem, and the question that popped to my head was where do startups go when they die..."-Joh.

His attempt to answer this question sparked another question:  what could be a mechanism created to recycle startups- which business opportunities were there that didn't go beyond the idea stage. His drive to solve this problem inspired the birth of Spatial8. He explains this idea and Spatial8's role in all this in his full interview.

During the interview, the hosts were curious to know how Joh fell down the rabbit hole? He shared that he is not an early adopter and doesn't own Crypto or any NFTs but researching it from the outside and studying it. On the other hand, his business partner does some Crypto mining and has some NFTs.They seem to balance each other well. Joyce and Salimi enjoyed Joh's great sense of humor around the subject.

"For the needs of the clients, I am in the space, and I'm understanding, and I also have spatial news newsletter: so I'm writing about Web3, and I'm writing about metaverse and the technologies that are involved...."-Joh

Joh tells our community that he likes the idea of DAOs and wanted to make his company a co-op when they first started. 

"Daos and co-ops have some touchpoints, everyone, for example, who works in the company or the co-op is also an owner, and everybody gets...if you are an owner, you get the same amount of votes: everybody gets one vote, it's all equal and doesn't matter if you are a founder, investor, big company, or individual, it doesn't matter, and we love that idea..."-Joh

Emerging Technologies Coming Together To Develop The Metaverse By Joh Orengo

We had the gentle and soft-spoken Anustha Kishor on NewForum. Anustha Kishor is a Fashion Futures Graduate from London College of Fashion. She is passionate about exploring Futuristic Fashion with a keen sense of Innovative Design and Luxury in a Sustainable space; acute knowledge of Garments and Accessory Design with interests aligned with Wearable Technology and 3D Design following Sustainability at the core.
Anustha is always eager to learn more and engage in research and development in the Future of Fashion. 

Anusha's early experience with Fashion happened while in India, pursuing a BA at the National Institute of Fashion Technology. She later decided to pursue a Master's degree at the London College of Fashion, where she explored different possibilities that Fashion could offer.

Anustha saw the endless possibilities that Digital Fashion brought to her carrier. She is currently an NFT artist on platforms like Foundation, Knownorigin and hopes to soon be on SuperRare. In addition, she will most likely be launching on DressX as a Digital Fashion brand fully dedicated to sustainability in Fashion in the Web3 space.

She cheerfully shares more about her successful journey entering the Digital Fashion space in her full interview.

So what is it in particular that drives Anustha in the Web3 space as a Digital Fashion Designer? 

Aunstha expressed that she appreciates the diversity and inclusivity nature of the Web3 culture.

"Web3 just breaks that barrier completely, and as a Digital Fashion designer, you can literally have clients around the globe possibly even in the international space station; the possibility is really endless, so that's that's pretty exciting for me..."- Anustha

Aunstha shared that she has always been interested in merging Technology with Fashion Design- Fashion, Technology, and Sustainability are her three main areas of interest, and Web3 makes it possible.

"Fashion and Technology are going hand in hand at the moment, and I think every designer right now definitely needs to have some digital sensibilities in their portfolio..."- Anustha

 Anustha believes that Blockchain Technology will bridge the gap of the sustainability issues within the Fashion Industry; especially Developers and Engineers have a crucial role in ensuring that. She adds that Fashion Designers as well when it comes to the design, construction process, and choice of materials.

"We are seeing a format of Web3 which is phygital; physical plus digital. I'm hoping to enter that format as well. We plan on doing limited NFT drops, which can be available in a physical form. However, the physical garment would be made completely sustainable along with the collaborations we have had along with the material, resources, and the eco-collaborators across the globe..."- Anustha

The Future Of Fashion & Web3 Possibilities Discussed By Anustha Kishor

We had Rahul Nanakumar known as gigarahul, on Twitter. He is a student at Rutgers University majoring in Finance and a steward at Scarlet DAO, a project building city DAO around college campuses across the US. They are building a social club and fellowship to onboard students onto Web3. In this episode, Rahul led the discussion on Dao Communities in Web3, Social Tokens & Sustainability. 

Rahul began his journey down the rabbit hole about three and a half years ago while working on a startup developing in the Creator Economy.The core concept of the startup was to give access to people who wanted to invest in their favorite creators.

" I had a good friend of mine who was a YouTuber, and I just wanted to help him align incentives with his community not have to get some third-party monetization; so he could fulfill what his vision was..."- Rahul

Rahul and his friend began looking into crowdfunding to raise money through his Reggae record, which became too expensive for them eventually.

" So I got interested in Cryptocurrency at the time, and I started researching Personal Tokens and Social Tokens. I started learning about various startups, various people who were involved in the space, and that's initially, what got me involved in the whole Crypto scene..."- Rahul

He shared all about his journey going down the rabbit hole of Web3 and an eight-week-long network-building fellowship he joined where he met incredible people in the space. He described his experience at the fellowship as an eye-opener. Rahul even started his own DAO inspired by the exposure he gained and his desire to build a community, which led to the birth of Scarlet DAO.

Rahul shared with our community that DAOs are his passion, and we believe him because whenever Rahul said DAOs, his eyes lit up. Gen-z's in Web3 talk about NFTs all the time, but for Rahul, it's all about DAOs. How did Rahul find this true passion?

" I've fallen in love with DAO's; building a Digital Nation focusing on community and concepts like platform cooperative that I think need to move to the forefront of the discussion around Web3 social and culture of Web3"-Rahul

Rahul believes in Community Tokens and explained that to him, enable networks and communities to reclaim value for themselves.

Rahul and the NewForum hosts discussed the idea of renting out NFTs. The example discussed was as a license and how NFT use cases beyond Digital Art and where NFTs for rent can be most relevant in Web3. Mario heard about the Crypto in 2014 but did not get into it. Eventually, he did, through one of his companies called Internation Blockchain Consulting (IBC). 

He founded IBC in 2017, a Crypto company that still exists to date and has become one of the biggest incubators in the world. Towards the end of 2020, Mario founded NFT Technologies which he talked about in this episode of NewForum.

"We have rules set in place to avoid the imperfections of human nature; the same rules need to be applied in the virtual world to limit the negative impact of the negative side of human nature of bullying, you know of canceling someone..."- Mario

In this episode of NewForum, we enjoyed the conversation about Mental Fitness, and the pros and cons of Community Building in Web3 and TwoPlus DAO's vision and mission.

Why did Louis decide to build a DAO, and what is the vision and mission behind TwoPlus DAO?

Louis shared that DAO fits his personality - where he is now in his life and professionally with the skills built over the past years. 

Louis expressed that he was always reluctant to work in a traditional environment. He was afraid of feeling imprisoned. He was a free-spirited kid and always did what he wanted, so having people tell him what to do and how he should behave made him uncomfortable.

" I stumbled on Crypto, and this was it. I fell down the rabbit hole three and a half years ago and found it exhilarating; I mean, I was an idealistic young adult, and Crypto was the perfect place to explore my ideas and work to pursue them..."-Louis

Community Building has always been his thing, so he gradually did more of that and been doing it for the past two years full time. According to Louis, Community Building is something that many people do in many different ways; Crypto is one of the specific ways you can do it. He added that in a DAO, you are not just consuming the product, and that is what he likes about DAOs and what led him to work in that area.

Louis talked about the challenges that humans pose prevalent in a DAO. He expressed that we need to solve them in a way native to this new environment-digital world. He suggested that the first step that made DAO exist is the ability to share ownership and trust each other, thanks to Blockchain.

DAOs are just a new environment, it's like you know we've worked in you know farms, and we've worked in in in factories, and we've worked in um you know office buildings, and DAOs are just like working online. It's not more efficient or this or that than anything else, it's just different, and it's good at doing different things and has different challenges..."-Louis

Louis expressed that for the past six months, through two years, he was going through this cycle of ups and downs of feeling very burnt out. He added that he has been diagnosed with ADHD and had anxiety for a while, combined with a very intense Web3 work and Community Building made life extremely hard.

Community Building, DAOs & Mental Fitness In Web3

It was such a pleasure to have the vibrant and self-driven Jade Darmawangsa on an episode of NewForum. Jade is a twenty-year-old, Social Entrepreneur and current CEO at X8 Media, an influencer marketing agency that works with tech platforms and civic movements. She also founded an incubator program CRE8, an organization that helps creators build long-term businesses through Blockchain. NewForum never fails to bring you informative and insightful conversations about Web3, highlighting Creators, Visionaries, Developers, and Investors. 

We enjoyed chatting with Jade, discussing the Creative Industry, her background, and her experience running her business and YouTube channel. Jade also talked about what she finds fascinating about Web3, particularly the social impact aspect of NFTs and more! 

Jade started an entrepreneurial journey at a very young. She wanted to be a Youtuber and began producing content at nine years old, and then transitioned her brand onto YouTube. She added that she made content for Instagram at its height.

Jade explained that being an influencer can be very unfulfilling, so she started her company X8 Media- helping brands get influencer connections since most of her friends were TikTokers and Creators. She also wanted to make a more meaningful impact in the real world. And became very passionate about environmentalism and started NFTree Haus, a project where they plant trees as NFTs in under-resourced neighborhoods. 

Jade brought a vibrant energy to her well-articulated interview and conversation on Web3's impact on the environment and the Creator Economy. We also enjoyed hearing the incredible story of Jade and how her quest to earn money to buy toys led her to Found her Media Company and all the other inspiring and fascinating projects she is currently working on. Jade credits her entrepreneurial mindset to her father, who also introduced her to Crypto. She also talked about what gets her excited about Web3, her learnings as a young, successful entrepreneur and content creator on YouTube. Jade expounded her vision and mission of NFTree Haus, a project where trees; are planted as NFTs in under-resourced neighborhoods. We appreciate Jade for empowering and giving back to underprivileged communities.

Jade Darmawangsa Discusses The Creator Economy, Why Some Creators Won't Move To Web3 & NFTs For Good

We are always honored to bring you inspiring guests on our podcast, and we had one of such guests in this episode of NewForum. Karsen Daily,  the Founder of MintCandy Productions. Karsen is highly involved in the Web3 space. We had a stimulating conversation about traditional marketing and brand development backgrounds in Web3, the psychology of collecting: on & off-chain; PFP burnout, catering to everyone yet catering to no one, and lack of brand cohesion and identity. We also chat about the evolution of the Creator Economy and where she sees outstanding opportunities for creators and artists. Karsen is currently building a marketplace and platform for an artist KidEight and the EVOL universe and told us all about it!

Karsen worked at a company called Superplastics, a startup animation studio and a designer toy company. She shared that she held many positions there, but her last role was Director of Brand Development. Karsen was always looking for new avenues and opportunities for brand awareness and expansion. She expressed that they had already built a successful animation character universe and even created content and released it. 

According to Karsen, it was essentially Crypto media without Crypto, and they were using Instagram and TikTok as their primary distribution platform.

"I had a call from Nifty Gateway in August of 2020, and everything was going over my head, but I understood the concept of monetizing this creative content in a way that was decentralized and democratized from a traditional avenue..."- Karsen

Karsen is writing a thesis called Personifying the Blockchain, which she aims to address in her genesis NFT drop "27 times". We asked her to tell us all about it.

"I am always coming back to philosophy because to me like that's what creatives sovereignty is, and that's what art is, it's an expression of self, and it's an expression of identity; and Blockchain is just this new kind of platform to be able to create I think a permanent paper trail and recording system of your personal beliefs and representations of your identity..."- Karsen

Karsen shared her opinion on the differences between traditional Web2 and Web3 Brands or Startups and talked about the evolution of the Creator Economy and where she sees the outstanding opportunities for creators and artists.

 She also explained the vision and mission behind the marketplace and platform she is building for KidEight and EVOL universe.

 Karsen brought the philosophically stimulating conversation to an end by explaining the difference between collecting on and off-chain.

Karsen Daily Talks About Traditional Marketing & Brand Development Backgrounds In Web3

Juliette Chevalier is a Software Engineer working for Aragon. She is also the Co-Founder of Surge Women - a female-led organization educating and securing women's place in Web3. 

We were honored to have her on NewForum to talk about how she got into Web3 as a Software Engineer. Juliette also discussed women entering the Tech and Web3 space, management of communities and DAOs, and what it means to transition from Web2 to Web3.

"I started diving deeper into technology. I wanted to understand what makes processes more transparent and efficient. And it was through that I fell down the rabbit hole, and I started coming into Blockchain. Blockchain is a way to integrate it within a traditional governmental structure, its influence in keeping things more transparent; being able to hold people more accountable..."- Juliette 

Juliette became a teacher at the boot camp, where she learned to code and would teach people how to code landing pages in a few hours.
She explained that every time she posted about the class, out of 40 people who showed up, 39 or 38 were guys, but one day she put out the post again, and to her surprise, the first five of the people who attended were women. Seeing those first five women inspired her to rebrand the class; rather than being a coding day, she called the class women's schooling day. By making this change, she saw an increase in the number of women who attended the class; 44 out of 45 were now women. 

 Juliette expressed that it was the moment she realized that building a community of women who want to learn together and collaborate; empowering one another is the essential part of making sure that she brought more women into the Technology space.  
And this is what inspired the birth of Surge Women. 

"We are acting as a DAO in some ways and not so much in other ways. The reason is that until the NFT drop, we haven't had a token. Firstly, we have a strong community which I think prides ourselves in strong initiatives, and  cool work together and a lot of engaging..." - Juliette

It was a hard time to have people vote. 
And so it's been more either the core team collaborating with the contributors and people from the community. It was difficult to dissect the priorities, so it was necessary to build a core team to establish the vision that they wanted to go towards, especially to make sure that their NFT project was a success. Juliette added that they started experimenting with some voting.

Juliette shared more about experimenting with voting and projects they are working on in support of organizations empowering women across the world. She also shared her views on the foreseeable future of Web3 and the place of women in the space. Juliette discussed the setbacks and mental models that have kept women from entering the Tech space or pursuing careers in Technology or Web3. At the end of our conversation with Juliette, she shared an empowering message to all women considering making the Web3/Crypto move.

Juliette Chevalier Shares Why Fewer Women Are In The Tech Space & How To Support Women In Web3

Our community was honored to have Co-Founder and Director of Museum of Crypto Art (MOC△) Colborn Bell on NEWFORUM. The Museum of Crypto Art is a Metaverse museum that lives in virtual reality and exhibits across digital worlds. Use Cases for Decentralised Credentials: Status Quo and Future Applications of Credentials

Gregory Landua, the co-founder of Regen Network, was initially interested in Bitcoin when he came across its white paper in 2008. At that time, he was already consulting on regenerative practices, focusing on permaculture design, consulting, and regenerative business work. He saw the potential of Bitcoin as a monetary experiment but remained skeptical about its ability to replace traditional currencies like the dollar.

In 2015, Gregory bought some Bitcoin and Ethereum but still had reservations about their potential. He was skeptical about Ethereum's automated smart contract systems and their disconnection from the real world. However, during his paternity leave in spring 2017, he witnessed the ICO boom on Ethereum, which led to a significant shift in financial capital. This shift, along with the growing societal interest and opportunity to question and reinvent money, inspired Gregory to think deeper about the potential of cryptocurrencies and their underlying technology.

In this episode of Newforum, Gregory acknowledged that web3 has its challenges, such as the presence of interests and power dynamics. However, he highlighted the potential of transparent computational contracts and protocols, where rules can be audited and interests can be made transparent.

The best solutions for creative coordination in web3 are continually being refined. This session aims to delve into the current state of creative coordination flows in web3, with a particular focus on the use of emerging “on-chain creative proofs” that aim to signal the provenance, production, curation, and consumption of creative and cultural outputs. 

We open up a new concept, “the aestheticization of DAOs”, as a research lens to assess wider cultural coordination layers that are emerging and affect the total creative activity of web3 communities. 

As we explore the concept, it's worth noting that processes of aestheticization in web3 not only occur in DAOs, but also across several other emerging web3 coordination and curation protocols. Our discussion will loosely delve into the question of whether DAOs are the most effective coordination tool for creative outputs and analyze how studying processes of aestheticization in web3 can provide valuable insights into emerging coordination and curation mechanisms.
