Roland-TR808 and Afro obsessed duo Africaine 808 conjure up the sort of loose limbed, tightly programmed drum based grooves that are aimed directly at your body. Made up of Berlin based Dirk Leyers and Nomad, they most often do so on Golf Channel Recordings and imbue thousands of years of rhythm history into their own borderless sounds. “No Rules. No Bullshit. All Styles,” is their own apt mantra, and they recently stuck to it when playing live at Dekmantel Festival 2016. 

We have a recording of what went down and it makes up this week’s podcast. Across one impossible to categorise hour they weaved their own unique tapestry of steel drums and rubbery kicks, skittish toms and squeaking synths. Fluid and evolving with a life of its own at every turn, the set is a testament to their ability to play with and coax all manner of sounds out of their machines. At times dark and high pressure, at others laid back and full of sun, it was one of many highlights and we are proud to be able to relive those moments with you again now.

As Peter Ackroyd said ‘I don’t believe in ghosts but they frighten me’ and with same sentiment you could say I’ve never been to LA but I love it.  

It’s an imagined landscape seen darkly through a lense and experienced via the silent milieu of isolation in the films of Michael Mann, the neo noir of Chinatown and the abandoned decadence of movies like Sunset Boulevard. I know it through Ed Ruscha’s photography, David Hockney’s paintings and the sunkist pool side splash of Paul Schrader’s American Gigolo. It exists in my head and I’m fully aware it isn’t a real place. 

So when exiled Angeleno, disque jock and producer https://soundcloud.com/deirdre-direktor, now a resident of Rotterdam, sent me some of her tracks for the label I asked her to do a mix and channel LA through it. In her words ’a foggy, mysterious, romantic sorta place with darkness lurking in places’.

This young talent is gaining a fast-growing reputation from Den Haag to Berlin, from Cologne to Tel Aviv, and completing a circle of influence as a desired guest on Intergalactic.fm. Not only a great DJ, Inga is also a truly restless producer, constantly recording lunatic jams and wild rhythms in a world of no musical compromises. Expect great things to come this year when she starts releasing and opens your ears. Currently under the wing of the Bunker Records team. The music she serves up comes from a place of love and knowledge in equal measures – no cheap thrills, just pure musical joy.
