If listening could play a role in rethinking the public sphere, its mediations, complicities, and normalizing mechanisms would first need to be better articulated. To that end, the legal, infrastructural, and conceptual limits of listening, both those local to Brussels and to the zombie remnants of 'modern listening' as such, are amplified into audibility.

Bill Dietz is a composer, writer, and co-chair of Music/Sound in Bard College’s MFA program. His work is often presented in festivals, museums, apartment buildings, magazines, and on public streets. Recent publications include: Maryanne Amacher: Selected Writings and Interviews (co-edited with Amy Cimini, 2020), and Universal Receptivity (co-written with Kerstin Stakemeier, 2021).

PUBLIC RETREAT is: Johanna Fager, Nicole Cecilie Bitsch Pedersen and Jo Mikkel Sjaastad Huse.
The project examines public space in dense, modern cities. Their soundscapes, characteristics and design. Who are they made by and for? Can one see what political and philosophical currents are prevalent in the way a bench looks? Can one hear it? In the presence of certain sounds, or in the absence of others?

PUBLIC RETREAT live on Lähi Radio 100,3 FM Helsinki. March 29, 5 PM.

"2 artists, Jo Mikkel Sjaastad Huse and Nicole Cecilie Bitsch Pedersen, are sitting in an apartment in Helsinki, their computers on the living room dining table, next to each other, with the same video call on both screens. On the other end of the call sits a third artist, Johanna Fager, in another room – a kitchen in southern Stockholm. The three of them are discussing how to proceed with a radio program for Lähiradio, to be aired on the 29th of March 2024, at five o’clock, as part of their exhibition PUBLIC RETREAT …through  the eye of the ear. Click, stop, ) ) ) ) !? in the gallery Oksasenkatu 11, – centering on questions about public ownership of the urban landscape, using sound as both thematic entry point and artistic method. 
The present of that future radio show will soon eclipse the moment they are in now– only a week separates them.

Assemblage film made of selected vegan meals from last four years, pictures of buildings in Skagen taken in february 2025 (and one from Frognerseteren, 2024), some toilets, a scooter from Athens, an empty shot glass, two staplers, an empty can of tomatoes, a takeaway coffee cup lid (before and after use), a gate in Berlin, a water tank I don’t remember having photographed, a road blocker from Helsinki, a combined doorbell and mailbox from Venice, a pile of clean dishes from Patricias place and a small non-stick kitchen pot filled with water.
There are also some short video clips (from the exhibition «Abandoning hope is a violent act» at Palmera in Bergen in 2022; from the highway crossing at Teisenkrysset in the summer of 2024; from the bird crowded corner of the central Helsinki lake Eläintarhanlahti in january 2024; from a open air re-enactment of the emergency transport of gold reserves during the occupation of Norway during the second world war, shown as part of the 200 year anniversary celebration of the central bank of Norway in 2016; from a slowly turning web shop personal shopper avatar; from the sound installation «PUBLIC RETREAT Explorer» at Platform, Stockholm, from the beginning of February 2025); and one shot of walking on the beach in Skagen, Denmark, three days ago.
