The Artefacts from the Museum

Being in the - unusual – situation of having a number of gigs lined up in close proximity to each other and considering what to rehearse for these, I was encouraged to pay close attention to songs I had written in the distant past. I took heed of this pointer, coming as it did from the close companion of nearly 30 years (to slightly misquote Dylan Thomas, I’d be a fool if I didn’t).
I recorded some of these rehearsals, as doing so gave them added focus, allowed some basic evaluation and also provided an opportunity to test out recording equipment that I use too rarely these days.
The suggestion was made that some of these recordings might be made available. Many of the songs were either recorded, years ago, in a rudimentary manner or were recorded with backings and arrangements very different to the ‘stripped down’ approach that characterised the gigs on what became ‘The Artefacts Tour’. Hence this collection.
The recordings themselves vary considerably in their strict ‘audio quality’; though, I think, some of the more basic recordings (made, for example, on a simple portable recorder) capture something of the ‘ease’ and unselfconsciousness (or recklessness!) of performance that can be absent from my studio-based musical ventures. With one or two songs, I added – briskly in all but one case (the vocal on ‘Rendezvous’ took multiple takes) – just one or two other parts. Some old songs which were played at the gigs, I have not included as although they were old they were also ‘newly rediscovered’ and have featured in recent albums, etc.
It was a strange experience, at least initially, to revisit yesterday’s outlook. I think I am a different person now to the one who wrote these words and, also, a different ‘artist’ (hmm): both in the fact that there are things here that I wouldn’t write/write about today and also that, with those things that I may still have interest in, I would approach quite differently in terms of exploration and expression. Anyway…I could go on about all this at great length, and you just want a quick scan of these notes before/during/after having a listen to the songs themselves, SO, I’ll stop shortly, after just describing the reason for the individual song notes.
One feature of the ‘Artefacts’ gigs was that I talked in a little more detail about the origin of the songs and, in general, the whole process of song writing. I was the ‘museum’s curator’. Therefore, this sheet, which replicates – but much more briefly (thanks be to heaven, I hear those who witnessed some of the more extensive monologues say) – aspects of the song introductions from the gigs. Sometimes, during the introductions, I wandered and wavered a bit. This is also the case with the written versions!
