I discovered the genre, label and Space Night programme a few months ago. Immediately listened to all the albums I could find as the sound completely mesmerises me. So sweet and gentle, yet driving and hypnotic haha :)

It was even recognized by the older generations and helped a lot make EM popular. But most of all it helped our spacemen to find the way back to the blue planet after frequent excursions of the endlessness of space!^^

An ambient-electro vinyl mix, made in 2013, using exclusively records from Elektrolux and Mikrolux record labels.
This mix is a tribute to late nineties / early 2000s 'Space Night' on the German satellite TV channel 'BR', which used to broadcast through the night showing satellite space images of the Earth and beyond, accompanied by smooth ambient electro music.

Sunday Snooze #21: Melon

De dj waar dj's fan van zijn komt met eclectische feel-good mix

Melon’s Sunday Snooze balanceert tussen dromerig wegzwijmelen en het gevoel hebben van ‘zo, wat zullen we vandaag eens gaan doen?’ Voor Jeroen Hofer alias dj Melon was het lastig om een bepaalde invalshoek te vinden. ‘Het was best een proces. Ik wilde een beetje Santana, maar ook wat electronica. Daarnaast vind ik soul weer beter bij de zondag passen, maar zocht ook naar iets van jazz want ik ben zelf een groot Miles Davis fan. Ik kon gewoon niet kiezen! Ergens had ik ook liever een mix van drie uur willen maken.’

Uiteindelijk heeft hij geen specifieke keuze gemaakt voor een bepaald genre, maar is er een conceptuele mix uitgerold. Met in het begin een glijende '80s vibe, waar het lijkt of je in een old school politieserie à la Hill Street Blues bent beland. Inclusief het onmisbare catchy basslijntje uiteraard.

Verder in de mix verandert de sfeer naar een Braziliaans salsafeest, met de grote Jorge Ben Jor aan de knoppen (jazeker, die van 'Mas Que Nada'). Een icoon in Zuid-Amerika, hier vrij onbekend. Maar voor je nuchtere zondagochtend is Jorge de ideale man om je uit bed te krijgen.
En dan de ‘hit’ van Delegation: 'Oh Honey'. In de VS brak de Britse soulgroep door met dit R&B-crossover nummer, wij Europeanen kennen ze eerder van de klassieker 'Where Is The Love (We Used to Know)' uit 1977.

‘Delegation! Ja dit is zo heerlijk zondagochtend,' aldus Melon. 'Het nummer komt er op deze manier ook goed uit vind ik. Precies zo tussen de salsa en de synths in, zodat het niet wordt overrompeld door nog meer soul.’

De Sunday Snooze van Melon is een diverse, toegankelijke mix geworden. En zeker niet alleen voor de zondag. ‘Hij luistert lekker weg hoor, haha. Ik wandel en fiets veel, en heb deze mix nu al twee dagen opstaan. Misschien wel beter dat ik geen keuzes kan maken. Geen concept is immers ook een concept.’

John Tejada is a Vienna-born, Los Angeles-based electronic music composer, DJ, and professor at CalArts. Tejada’s professional output of music began in 1994 and has never let up, including four albums for the revered label Kompakt, plus releases on Pokerflat, Cocoon, Plug Research, Seventh City, Playhouse, Defected, and his own label since 1996, Palette Recordings. Tejada has also been responsible for remixing over 100 songs for acts including The Postal Service, Télépopmusic, The Field, Bomb The Bass, Way Out West, Kevin Saunderson, Darren Emerson, Gui Boratto, Simian Mobile Disco and many others. Tejada’s latest venture as Wajatta is a new musical collaboration with international star Reggie Watts, having released their debut album, Casual High Technology, in 2018 and latest album Don’t Let Get You Down in 2020 on Brainfeeder.

Today marks the release of John's fourth LP, 'Year of the Living Dead' which John's describes here;

“The album was started using tools I was unfamiliar with, which became an interesting exploratory process,” Tejada says. “Staying away from the obvious and having to re-learn simple things was a fun challenge.” You can hear these new creative pulsions pushing the eight tracks on Year Of The Living Dead ever-forward; the album has a unique cast, and though there are trace elements of the genres Tejada has indulged previously, he’s never quite put them together this way before. There’s the dubwise glitter sprinkled across the moody opener “The Haunting Of Earth”, the kind caresses found amongst the deftly woven textures of “Sheltered”, and the churchy melancholy, all hymnal and golden, of “Echoes Of Life”
