DJ Mixes and Live Shows

This new album sees Jon return to the dance music production, with a slew of tracks ranging from discerning styles of house music, acid and techno through to discursive electronica, all underpinned by his trademark eclecticism.
‘Medication Time’ has already received much early critical acclaim from various music legends, who heard it in late 2023. 
Opening track ‘Sail We Must’ (and its intro) is a tribute to Jon’s late friend and inspiration, Andrew Weatherall.
‘Fail We May, Sail We Must’ are Andrew’s most renowned tattoos, “and is as good a statement of living in this world as I have ever heard,” Jon says. “This track was made very much with Andrew in mind, especially his later works and ALFOS DJ sets. It started as a beatless track made to encourage a peaceful frame of mind, which I did not even realise was being conducted by the rhythmic sound of the waves lapping outside my window by the sea, where I now live and work.” 
The comeback single, ‘Mighty Horses’ has a unique, haunting vocal courtesy of Betty Steeles which carries this captivating house track along on the crest of a wave.
The second single, the huge dancefloor monster ‘Brothers and Sisters’, features the vocals of Chicago music legend, Curtis ‘Move Your Body’ McClain - the voice of Marshall Jefferson’s seminal ‘House Music Anthem’.
‘Travelling Show’ is a dirty disco-funk bomb, while recent single ‘Finish Him!!’, produced with Jack Said What mainstay Steve Mac, has been destroying dancefloors in 2023, and is a raw, storming, bleepy acid jacking techno monster, inspired by 8-bit computer gaming.
The title track, meanwhile, was one of his first productions when he returned to music. “I wanted to explore a deceptively simple, driving, pleasing, engaging electronic rhythm, with a breakdown that suddenly disorientates the listener by losing the kick-drum, with a sonic drop into the chaotic sound of the urban maelstrom we leave behind when we are on the dancefloor. Suddenly, it snaps you back into the escape of the disco, with the call to the prescription — ‘Medication Time’,” Jon says.
“There is a theme throughout this album that I tried to maintain whilst producing it,” Jon continues, “of addressing wo/mankind’s diverse beliefs, and how we could better manage our time in this world.” To this effect, all other vocals were provided by the recently departed Reverend Don Gorgon, with some words of wisdom.

Due South is a side project, started in 2023, which is experimental in nature, using mainly analogue instrumentation and is a stream, of beatless, rhythmic, hypnotic journeying music, with healing frequencies laying within..

"Part 1 -Sub Aqua",  is made from 2 live passes through a Roland SH-09, 2 passes through a Roland 303, and light touches of hi hats and a tom from Rolands 808 and 909.

It was conducted by the lapping of the waves outside the studio, and is the beatless basis for the opening track on my new album ‘Medication Time’. 

The Due South project and artistic name and persona have the intention of creating a track that will never come to an end, and can also splinter off into other directions though reinvention and collaboration, leaving a piece of meditative, calm inducing music with no end, and having no definitive version.

Due South is the artist name for this side project, as well as the concept, which has already splintered into new directions, which can be found on my Bandcamp page :

Due South - Part 1 - Sub Aqua

A mix from late 2023, for dancing in the rain for Brighton Pride 2023. House. Dirty, sweaty, big room / sweaty basement house. Due South "Forget About Everything" (Jon Carter's Full Submersion Dub)

This is a mix I made of the most out there vinyl tracks that travelled the world with me, at the back of the box, for those nights when the crowd were right *THERE* - up for anything. When the atmosphere is electric, sweat pouring off the ceiling and down the walls, with a red light in a low basement room, and you take the most amazing risks, knowing it will work.
This is a link to a DJ mix I made of ONLY some those tunes. It's eclectic, out there, unexpected, and every tune has many tales behind it.
And, as a mix, it still works. This is compiled and mix from decades of DJing with vinyl, and is drenched with the energy of all those clubbers over all those years. Enjoy some tales of the unexpected.

Jon Carter has released his first album for 25 years, after re-inventing himself in various guises outside of the music world and being away from music for over a decade.

He only returned to producing again 18 months ago, but now the dance music legend is back with a bang.

Reverend Gorgon is “a character and a half” that Jon met whilst down on the beach one day. “A part of him will always be within me,” says Jon, wistfully.

“In short, whether he likes it or not, Andrew changed the course of my life through his music. I like to think he would like this piece, and that it is deserving of the name”.

“Andrew’s passing affected me very deeply, and still does. Emotionally, I showed this openly. Sadly, this was also a point where I started to be medicated, not entirely correctly, and my mental well-being was also stigmatised. I’ll say no more.”

The release date of 23rd February 2024 for ‘Medication Time’ is coincidentally in the same week as the anniversary of the passing of the Guv’nor, Andrew Weatherall, and on the 25th anniversary of the final Heavenly Social party at Turnmills, in London.

This was a live set, mixed live on Radio 1 on Mary Ann Hobbes' Breezeblock show. It won the 2001 NME Award for best mix on that show, as voted for by the public. It's eclectic, energetic, and hyperactive, and the manic nature of the performance came across that night.

Also a Beach Boys accapella turned into a lo-fi break tune, which was their first and only authorised remix, and for many years after making it, originally for playing as an end of night tune. Every track has a story behind why it's in this mix, or has had my fingerprints involved in it in some way.

A live mix from Printworks, London, at a night celebrating 25 years of UK clubbing institution, Bugged Out!
I played for them many times for many years, as a resident, for some absolutely amazing nights.
The opportunity to play some far out tunes, because the crowd were so up for anything, was an amazing privilege.

This mix of 25 minutes (representing 25 years) has some of the biggest tunes that have a personal connection with my nights at Bugged Out!. It's a fast changing mix to get as many tunes into 25 minutes as possible, and there's some glittering classics and dirty gems here. This went down a storm that night.

"Seconds out, round two. Here come the hotstepper...
You know how the Social story goes. The Chemical Brothers took things to the 'next level', spending thirteen weeks blowing minds & rocking floors in a dank pub basement, mashing up breakbeats, old skool hip hop, acid house & wigged out rock 'n' roll to a crowd of 25 hour party people. The Albany days passed on into Heavenly history, as much a part of the equation as "Nothing Can Stop Us" or "Weekender" & moves were made onwards & upwards. Enter Jon Carter.
Jon Carter entered Social lore at The Albany, not behind the decks, but on the floor (in every sense). Jon was introduced to the club by regular face Mark Jones (the top boy in charge of the excellent Wall Of Sound label, becoming a full time bar fly at The Albany, moving from fresh faced to totally fucked every week. At the time, Jon was a studio engineer, working exclusively on jungle & dance hall tracks. Like so many of us, he got sucked into the whole Social thing - the weekend ends at 6 o'clock on Monday morning, two little birdies down & the biggest headache on the way. The week of the last Albany session, it was all back to someone's had been booted out. Since then, he's been one of the family. He'd made an odd little record for Wall Of Sound ("The Dollar", as Artery) which had the sound of a Social anthem in the making & he'd done a few DJing sessions back at people's houses after the club, blowing up ragga & bogle gear alongside Public Enemy, ZZ Top & The Jam. What was to come next was anyone's guess, which is probably why Heavenly got him on the pay roll.
At this point, Monkey Mafia was born. First came the rock 'n' roll freakbeat fest of "Blow The Whole Joint Up". Secondly, borrowing heavily from dance hall queen Patra, "Work Mi Body" arrived, seeing Jon settle into a groove previously untapped by man or woman. The 'Mafia wildstyle is radically different from the Chemicals (and, in turn, totally different to Mr. Fearless', but that's another compilation all together). The sound is best likened to that of a car full of Ganja'd up yardies driving into a brick wall at 5 o'clock on a Sunday morning while listening to Funkmaster Flex, The Who, The Bassbin Twins & Gregory Isaacs. It's a big summer sound that gets the sun shining, if only in your mind. It's Monday at Notting Hill Carnival, It's party music & it's a party that everyone's welcome to, the "all back to mine, let's wake up the neighbours" kind. It's a sound we've grown to love, like some mad kid you've adopted as one of your own. Much like Jon himself...
