i like the discussion. and the convolution. i hear the interesting changes and have absolute ideas about where things should or shouldn't go, but i have zero background in theory. when beSRK takes one of my tunes and substitutes chords, I can see (in most cases, and in the pretty stuff in particular) the value of theory education.

I did enjoy the discussion-I do here an influence of Steely Dan-haven't study much music theory but sure enjoy fine music of all types and this is one to enjoy !!!

You really must score this for a big band. Could you imagine hearing it performed (and playing guitar, of course)? That would be quite something.

Really tasty playing in the Barney Kessel? vein or is it Jim Hall?  The horns are ace, and you gotta be good if you actually have good horn players with you.  All those scribes and religious adherents weren't lost if they managed to lose themselves in the process.

Ok, I don't usually do descriptions and this really isn't one but this is part of what was on my mind as I started doing this one. That and Denny Dias' playing with Steely Dan but that would be a real side track. Although I mention it because of the musical influence on this one. Thanks Jonathan. Anyway I'm a bit of a music theory nerd sometimes. Mostly with jazz chord substitution ideas. This is where my knowledge of some  of the more complicated ideas about music start. As I was pondering this stuff the other day it occurred to me how very subjective most of this stuff is. I might feel some theory is scientific and indeed they are but all music theory comes down, in the end, to the listeners perception of where the music is going. It's all based on context. Both in the individual piece and all the other music before. I mean humans create and listen to music so one would think at least some of it, the theory that is, will continue to work as long as there are people but at least parts of it may fade as people's perception changes over time. That and the fact that if people cease to exist the music itself and theories about it will become meaningless. I've often thought about the many religions that have faded away. How important they were to generations of people. Spending their lives studying them. Basing their lives on what  they thought to be factual everlasting truths and now they're gone. I always looked on in pity of those old scribes wasting their lives studying make believe. It's only recently occurred to me I'm most likely doing the same thing.
