The man behind the much loved bespoke imprint Cotton Goods, Other Ideas and the Moteer/Mobeer labels. He makes beautifully modest and understated music, highly recommended to fans of life's subtler joys.

"A lot of times it’s not only the sound itself but also the way it has deteriorated. I just love the crackle of vinyl, the saturated distortion of analogue tape, the hiss of wax-cylinders, the aging process of the artifact itself is equally important as the sounds themselves. This aural work explores the fields of Flushing Meadows Corona Park in an attempt to locate a resonance, residue, and potential activity from various moments in time. The Park, once being an ash dump, has undergone multiple stages of change, difficulty, and prosperity through its use and its immediate community. With the use of audio playback devices, field recordings and sound from archival films of the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs held in New York City, a mix will be performed in an attempt to collapse time and matter into one sonic experience; a soundscape paralleling the state of the park-both refined and ill.

TAPE No.8: a postcard//round one

Using both sculpture and musical performance in his practice, Kevin Beasley explores the physical materiality and cultural connotations of both objects and sound. His sculptures typically incorporate everyday items like clothing, housewares, or sporting goods, bound together using tar, foam, resin, or other materials. Often they also contain embedded audio equipment that warps and amplifies the ambient tones of their surroundings. For Storylines, Beasley has created two new works specifically for the Guggenheim’s Frank Lloyd Wright–designed building. Within this vast and open sonic environment, Strange Fruit (Pair 1) and Strange Fruit (Pair 2) (both 2015) offer an experience of intimacy, absorbing and reflecting the sound of the crowd at the scale of a personal conversation. Each work embodies this spirit of dialogue in its two-part structure—at its core are two athletic shoes, one merged with microphones, the other with speakers. Suspending these objects in space, Beasley compounds their technological interchange with additional layers of meaning, bringing to mind the urban phenomenon of shoes hanging from overhead wires or poles (itself an open-ended form of communication). At the same time the works’ titles refer to history of lynchings in the American South memorialized by Bronx schoolteacher Abel Meerepol in the 1937 protest song “Strange Fruit.” In these contexts, the hanging forms of Beasley’s sculptures resonate not only with his body, which molded them by hand, or with the bodies moving through the museum, but also with those inscribed in the problematic history of race and class in the United States.

For this recording- the right ear holds Strange Fruit (pair 1) and the left ear holds Strange Fruit (pair 2). These were recorded at the Guggenheim museum while each sculpture is installed across the rotunda facing eachother. The microphone's are connected to the speakers of the opposite sculpture so as a performer speaks and touches one sculpture the audio comes out of the other.

This recording is actually a mixdown of two separate recordings I performed with each sculpture- one after the other. In time, in space, in question.

THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS is the debut LP from Texas born artists Twigs & Yarn. It is an intimate story pieced together between continents and bedrooms, a collage of musical messages assembled from traditional instruments, found objects, lonely nights, paper cups and trembling voices. The songs range from simple improvisations to meticulously arranged soundscapes, with subtle textures and melodies held together by a drowsy ambience and fuzz that will leave you sleepy-eyed and dreaming. The album was beautifully mastered by Nick Zammuto (The Books, Zammuto).

Recorded during a yearlong separation, the music embraces the discovery of sharing sounds from across the sea through ftp servers and email. Utilizing lo-fi recorders, homemade microphones, looping pedals and layered vocals, the songs developed slowly from the random joining of sound clips never intended for each other, creating beautiful unexpected moments.

Many of the sounds for the album were recorded by Lauren McMurray while living in Japan: radio frequencies, people talking on the streets, temple bells, and quiet vocals hummed into coffee tins in the dead of night. Her voice is ethereal and strange, and she uses it to create a texture of sounds from dreamy whispers to full choruses. The final compositions were augmented and stitched together by Stephen Orsak using guitars, electronics, field recordings and sequencers. Floating across the sea, changing forms, and taking us to an unknown place, The Language of Flowers is a soundtrack for nostalgic dreams.

Sparse rhythm, a driving swell of guitar, and airy vocal layers bring out a familiar T&Y ambience, but this song evokes a haunting feel with a spooky bounce you can dance to. With a jumbling of cut up vocal lines Yuurei wanders through the nonsensical like an apparition and materializes for a moment with its only discernible lyrics: The State of Terrorism. さあさあ。。。それは幽霊. (Come now. It is a ghost.)

This song is one of several in the works for their upcoming project Hungry Ghost. It was mastered by Shawn Hatfield aka Twerk.
