David Axelrod was one of my favourite producer/arranger (and my PSN user name - daxelrod) , especially as I was looking for breaks and samples as a younger beat producer. One thing you needed to know about Axelrod's tracks is that even if it sounded like it didn't have any samples (usually found at the beginning of a song), there was always a segment of the song that you could just lose your mind to it and load it right away in the MPC. David Axelrod's sound was very unique, and extremely innovative for his time ( as an arranger in the mid-1960's/as a producer in the late 1960's) - focusing on heavy drums and baroque string sections. He heavily collaborated with Cannonball Adderley, and also artists such as David McCallum, Gene Ammons, the Electric Prunes and Lou Rawls. He's been sampled by The Beatnuts, Diamond D, Madlib, Dr. Dre and so many more. 

Axelrod's touched many subjects in his songs, ranging from spiritual, environmental or musical interpretations of poems. Let's celebrate his legacy and embrace his heritage.

For this episode of Funk the World we wanted to dig deep and come up with another collection of songs from around the world that spoke to us. Our last Funk the World had an heavy Latin flavor but for this one we stretched out to include some songs from Africa as well. We hope you enjoy our heady blend of funky world music and it will inspire you to dig into some of these artists like Kansando from NYC whom was originally from Dominican Republic, his blend of traditional sounds with newer ideas and production techniques really draws you in.
