Forscher haben seit Jahrhunderten Geschichten über das äußerst seltene Gewitter-Phänomen des Kugelblitzes gehört. Obwohl es bis heute keine wissenschaftliche Erfassung gibt, sind die Augenzeugenberichte bemerkenswert ähnlich: Leuchtende, frei schwebende Sphären, die in bunten Farben schillern und feste Körper durchdringen können. Diese Erscheinungen dauern normalerweise nur wenige Sekunden und ändern oft ohne ersichtlichen Grund ihre Bewegungsrichtung. Manchmal verschwinden sie mit einem lauten Knall. Nun wurde erstmals ein Kugelblitz einer spektrographischen Analyse unterzogen.
