Anything Again

With the chance to finish my bands very lengthy and very expensive DIY album on the horizion, thought I'd mess around and upload an old version of Natalie. The song's changed a bit since this recording, but it's definitely worth a listen and some lulz

Hopefully you're not getting soundcloud track fatigue at this point. 

This was, in my opinion, for a long time the best song I had ever written. To me, it was exactly what looking at a certain person sounded like - a certain person who may or may not be the same person as Fool. A certain person who might be the craziest person I've ever known, and the one person who I'll never really get over. 

But hey, c'est la vie.

A lot of the lyrics are very personal things and moments. At best there's probably 3 people in the world who would ever understand them all, but that's hardly the point of lyrics. 

Overall, I think it's a pretty strong piece. Very Jack Johnson-y, with a bit of a Spanish, almost tangoy vibe. Nothing like realizing you'll always be in crazy with someone to make a good love song.

And without further adieu - the best song I've ever written. The song that I listen to if I want to assure myself that I can actually be a professional musician. The song that's made writing other songs really difficult, in terms of living up to the quality 

I'm getting there though ;) 

If you haven't picked up on it yet, all of the songs that I've recently posted were all done on Garage Band on my iPhone, and I'm most proud of how this one came out.

I got the name of the song from a conversation I was having with my buddy in our kitchen one day. It's a good way to summarize life in the modern age - where people are forced to be both emotional and logical, but never really being fully satisfied with the situations life presents (thanks Core Humanities 202!)

A bolder track than some of my others, I want future songs to also move in this direction of more energy and emotion. But as far as how long it takes to do something well...well *enter hook line here*

I recently submitted this song to a local songwriting contest, and it was reviewed 6th of songs made in Northern Nevada for 2015 (or as I like to call it, "Double Bronze")

An "oldie," written back in the day with me band Love Like Wes. I was really into Allan Watts lectures, and this song kinda captures my feelings on acceptance and some exsitensial crisses, stuff I still deal with all the time actually. So that's fun.

We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things - the Jason Mraz Album this song is off of - will forever be one of my favorites. To me that record will always sound like driving up to my grandfathers ranch with my friends when we were 16 and life was in one of its fleeting homeostases of absolute perfection.  This song is kinda like the shade that's on the end of those kind of eras, when things are falling a part bit by bit, but you can't help but to love them all the more because of it. As a song it wasn't a particularly hard hitter for me until I listened to the Raining Jane version. The stripped down simplicity of it just destroyed me, and I knew it had to become part of my arsenal.
 
I once drunkenly played this song to some people at the tail end of a party and made a few girls cry. That was pretty cool.

Beautiful Mess (Live Cover)

When I first heard this song done live, I told myself I would learn all of it if I ever got a loop pedal. I got a loop pedal. (an RC-30 for any who care to know)

Of all the songs I cover this one has an especially large amount of things I can relate to - from trying to be an artist who writes his own music and words, to living on a couch, and everything in between. When I do play it there's very little I'm faking and I'll hopefully be able to write and play something of my own that's this great one day.

I did a video to this as well, so that's pretty exciting. My friend is editing that right now, because all parties can benefit from trade and specialization (this Economic degree WILL be used god dammit)

Send Me On My Way

Jonathan Rolling is singer-songwriter who has a passion for high quality music and performance. He is now in the process of putting in the hours and doing the work required of a professional artist; mostly because it's become abundantly clear to him that music is something he must do. 

With that acceptance has come a lot of excitement and fear. It's a great thing to think that one has what it takes to have a viable career in music, and another thing to believe it so deeply that he or she subconsciously sabotages all other forms of stability. Good thing he doesn’t do that. 

While staying true to the style of the early 2000's singer-songwriters who first inspired him to play, he is also continually pushing himself to create a sound that is genuine, relatable, unique - and frankly just cool - all at the same time . A surprisingly large amount of artist find a genre or a style and get comfortable, or try too hard to be something that they aren’t, coming off as disingenuous in the process. He’s not trying to reinvent the wheel, but he is attempting to truly find his own sound with elements of pop, folk, rock, and hip hop. 

His underlying belief is that the best promotion will always be great quality, and that an artist and his music must truly be great in order to survive in the modern market. Fortunately he's up to the challenge.
