Y Blewyn Glas ar Afon Dyfi

A Galliard played on a shawm made in 2011 from plastic drawing film, masking tape and 3 elastic bands.  The reed is a squashed plastic drinking straw.   I believe this to be the pinnacle of my achievements.    Tools list:- scissors.  Total time:- 10 minutes including recording.

Sunny's Wildest Dreams (Upottery) 06

A trad Breton song about a bagpipe sung by Brigitte Kloareg.   I am accompanying using a boxwood Bb single tenor drone set I made in 1989.  This is taken from the cassette Saith Rhyfeddod recorded in 1991 at Sain studio.    We later won a competition at Amzer Nevez, Ploemeur with this song.   (Two of the judges were Y. Bihan and J. Baron - fix) Sorry about the flutter but the cassette is knackered.

Ar Biniou 1991

From 1991 recording released on cassette by Recordiau Sain.   Two Welsh melodies played on Prowse flute.  Accompanied by Ceri Mattews on cittern.    A bit of acceleration, but I was younger then and more volatile.

Sawdl Y Fewch & Nyth y Gog

From 1991 recording released on cassette by Recordiau Sain.  A song about a horse followed by a tune about hunting.   I made all the reedy things.   Julie Murphy squeaks first followed by Ceri Matthews on oboe then me on oboe, then Brigitte Kloareg.  For the tune, Ceri switches to cittern and I play oboe & pibgorn.   Martin Lane on fiddle.

Ar Y Bryn

The first recorded outing for these tunes in 1998, with Andy Cutting playing a Castagnari accordion, Ceri Matthews, Takamine guitar, and me on a very battered E flat clarinet covered in electician's tape.   From fernhill album Llatai, (Bejo CD 23)

Gladez & Katell

A schottische that came to me in the naughties whilst cycling.   Played on old Potter F band flute.   Accompanied by Steve Tyler on cittern.     Recorded by Dave Wisdom in the corner of a barn near Bondleigh, Devon using an Audio Technica 4050 mic and SE reflection filter. The rest of the arrangement that I edited out was recorded in a pigsty in Cornwall.

Yet another version of this tune, this time played by Ceilidh band Juice, Bernard & Danny KilBride, fiddle & guitar, Dean Ryan, bass & me on flute.   I've edited out the following tune which had a completely outrageous synth wash all over it.   I would have been happy with Morton Subotnick, but not what they did to it!

Gladez (Juice) Yet another version 2001

Last of the Juice ceilidh band tracks.   La Roulante composed by the great Jean Blanchard.    Bernard KilBride fiddle, Danny Kilbride guitar, Dean Ryan bass, me on D pastoral oboe. Recorded Jan 2001.    I edited out the first tune because I hate electronic organ with a vengeance.

A musical crochet arrangement from 2012 of a couple of my simple dance tunes, this time with hurdy gurdy (Steve Tyler) & unbelievably for me, modern border pipes (Katy Marchant) and the trusty Sunny Davidson on guitar.   The "Stump" melody was composed as a link piece in and old Fernhill set.   I play a Bb band flute and Bb pastoral oboe.

5 time waltz composed by Sunny Davidson.   (Brilliant).   Sunny - guitar,  Steve Tyler - hurdy gurdy, Katy Marchant - Swaynepipes. & me on F pastoral oboe.    This is a brief, rough edit from a complex arrangement from 2012.   It was recorded in a pigsty if I remember correctly.

Habibtis (Edit)

Levriad very roughly recorded through a very small desk to a Zoom at Yard in Devon on 7May 2011.   I wrote these three reels in 2009/10 and recorded them at the time on Jackie Oates' thrown out Flower Power iMac 500MHz OSX Panther.     Sunny Davidson - guitar, Liz Nabb - fiddle, me on Hawkes 8 key flute made in 1895.    The one in the picture.

I play an Eb clarinet (recon.), Bb pastoral oboe (hornbeam & yew) with two different bells for a change of colour, and Bb bagpipes with tenor drone (boxwood & cherrywood). I wrote the melody in 1997 and it was first recorded by fernhill with Andy Cutting in '98.   Swiss Pagan Metal band Eluveitie used it a decade later for their brilliant song Brictom mistaking it for a traditional tune :)

I play early 20th Cent. Bb band flute, hornbeam & yew Bb pastoral oboe with two different bells and boxwood & cherrywood Bb bagpipes.

More from Primaeval's Last Stand.   These tunes were penned by Cliff Stapleton in the form of a Ronde de St Vincent.   Sunny Davidson's quivering accordigon filler is particularly impressive in the middle bit.   Good squeaking at the end.    Lovely thunking bass from Ed Davidson as usual.
I play hornbeam Bb pastoral oboe and switch bells from flared to ovoid between the two melodies.   Also final fanfare on Baywood Bb bombard.

Cliff's Black Rock Mazurka set  PLS

Two part mixed tunes from Primaeval's Last Stand.    The first is written by Sunny Davidson.   It could be "Iron Eye" as I have never seen it written down.   The second is Katell written by me which first appeared on a fernhill recording Llatai in 1998.   I used an early 20th cent. Bb band flute and Bb pastoral oboe.

Wonderful melody written by Sunny Davidson from Primaeval's Last Stand.   Again, it is unfinished.    I used a Hawkes 8 key D flute 1895ish,  and my D pastoral oboe made of holly.

Sunny's Wildest Dreams  PLS

The Red Pipers Strain.  Old Welsh melody.    From a 1993 recording.   This is played on a double pipe like a boha, with a bass drone with very big horn recurving at the end.   I made it in 1992.   Chanter applewood.

Erddigan y Pibydd Coch 93

A couple of Welsh tunes pipulated on the Bb pipes I'm still playing with Celtech & Levriad.   Recorded 1993.    I concocted the pipes in 1989 and made them from some boxwood which was a present from the squeakers of Strobinell.

AberTri 93

This is a part mixed version of the tune from Primaeval's Last Stand.    The Davidson brothers and Matt Spacegoat decided to add a tiny bit of percussion as I was not able to make it to the studio and KEEP CONTROL.    Eluveitie, eat your hearts out!

Gladez PLS

From an old demo tape with much distortion and magnetic print through.   Starts with Dennis Balfour singing last verses of Bogie's Bonny Bell.   What a lovely singer!   Then a jig & slip jig on the whistle.

Bishop of Bangor set 1989

Starts with the end of Belle Verginie sung by Brigitte Kloareg, accompanied by Dennis Balfour on Sobell 10 string short cittern and me on flute.      The following tune is played a bit fast on Prowse flute and some badly EQ'd pastoral oboe.   Dennis on Sobell cittern.   Can somebody identify the tune please?    Christened "That Tune" in Bangor where they loved it back in the 80's
