Isaac Newton used Pascal's triangle and a binomial series expansion to calculate pi. He applied the binomial theorem to the equation of a circle (x² + y² = 1, solved for y) and then integrated the resulting series to find the area of a quarter circle, which is equal to π/4. This allowed him to derive a series representation of pi and approximate its value.
