The Gymnopédies, published in Paris starting in 1888, are three piano compositions written by French composer and pianist Erik Satie.

The melodies of the pieces use deliberate, but mild, dissonances against the harmony, producing a piquant, melancholy effect that matches the performance instructions, which are to play each piece "painfully", "sadly" or "gravely".

Outside of academia, I am a trained classical guitarist and lutenist, who, in the past, was a semi-finalist of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, and who has appeared in solo recitals and concerto performances throughout the UK and Europe. I am also an accomplished choral and orchestral conductor. Previous engagements include performances with the Britten Sinfonia, English Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra on the Hill, Cambridge University Musical Society Symphony Orchestra, the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge and the Choir of Downing College, Cambridge.
