My girl, she comes from Carolina. Sweet tea running thru her veins.
Nothing, I mean nothing could be finer; she is sunshine even when it rains.
When you kiss her, she will taste of peppermint. Smells like honeysuckle growing on the fence.
I know if you meet one, you will be convinced it’s a Carolina girl for you.

If you find happiness, you’d better hold on tight.
Talking sports and politics just ain’t worth the fight.
Most bugs are a nuisance – mosquitos are the worst.
The greatest truths are seldom recognizable at first.
Nothing’s quite as magical as watching lightning bugs.
Nothing gets you smiling more than grandbaby hugs.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it once again.
Nothing gets you quite the way a Carolina girl can.

She’s got charm & grace, of course, and lot’s of style. Mess w/ her she turns into a crocodile.

Carolina Girl

There were times I knew that I was gonna change the world.  
Ride off in the sunset, on a horse, with the girl.
Be a hero, save the day – maybe they’ll throw me a parade.
Instead, I’m working nine to five, trying to pay my dues.
Most weekends I’ll mow the lawn, maybe change a fuse.
Fix a leak and pull some  weeds.  Maybe a hero’s not what you need.

I could have been a bright light in your darkness, a pedestal to lift you up.
A voice of reason in uncertainty, when your lips were dry, I could have been your cup.
I always tried to stand so tall.  I soon found out I could not do it all.
The thing you needed me to be – was enough.

Looking back, it’s plain to see all the things I could have been.

Time spent watching the stars is never wasted time.

Sitting on a park bench, watching people. 
Never know just who or what will come by.
A class from 2nd grade, a bunch of weirdos on parade, 
A girl I used to know in Junior High.
There’s a man who looks just like Pat Sajak.
I asked him if I could buy a vowel.
I guess he’d heard that before, he said, “Sure, there are four,”
“You wanna buy some more or solve the puzzle now?

A man who asked me if I had a quarter.
I didn’t, but I gave him a dollar bill.
A bunch of kids on skates, a lawyer running late.
Someone’s grandma selling daffodils.
A man came by and asked if he could join me.
I said I didn’t know I was coming apart.
He grinned, told me his name, I grinned back and did the same,
Then for forty-five minutes he opened up his heart.

I should be happy with this life I’ve got.
I should be happy, but I’m ‘fraid I’m not.
I should be happy, but I find, happy’s just a waste of time.
Sadness comes along and smooths things out.

He proceeds to share with me his story.
I could not believe the tales he spun.
Some lives have been charmed, some lives have been harmed, 
But my new friend, he’d had neither one.
“Everything I touch,” he said’s, “been middling.
I have never had the highs, nor lows.
You may think that sounds grand, but what you fail to understand,
Is that it gets so lonely with no place to go.

He asked me if I thought I was happy.
I paused to think it through, then I agreed.
“That’s what I once thought,” he said, “Least what I was taught instead
Of looking at my life with  honesty.
But I noticed all those peaks and valleys
Started looking like a parking lot.
It was    flat, it was square, and it never went anywhere,
I spent all my time just looking for my spot.

I should be happy with this life I’ve got.
I should be happy, but I’m ‘fraid I’m not.
I should be happy, but I find, happy’s just a waste of time.
Sadness comes along and smooths things out.

I’ve been thinking ‘bout this man’s dilemma, pondering the moral of his tale.
Do sad and happy cancel out? Do whispers balance when you shout,
Is winning just the opposite of fail?
Or are they all companions in this journey we’re all in together?
Would life be complete if one was gone?
You gotcha good, you gotcha bad, you gotcha happy and your sad.
And they all come together and wind up in this song.

So when life gives you happy, grab it all.
And when you’re short of happy, still stand tall.
Do what you can with all the rest, hold on tight and do your best,
Another dose of happy’s heading your way.
And if you’re still running short, I’m happy to report.
I’ve got another dose of happy heading your way.

I Should Be Happy

Some call it pride. I call it joy.
I go outside and I enjoy
All those things that grow.
There in my yard, there in the ground, there in the place I
Planted. Watch ‘em come up
Watch ‘em reach for the sky.
As far as I know, the flowers that grow

I wrote a song to ease the pain of losing,
But nothing ever seemed to rhyme, and metered time could not describe
What the cost of my loss would measure.
She was so delightful and amusing. 
She was everything to me, both dignity and peace of mind.
She’s not there, breath of air and pleasure.
