Unknown Quantities With Sonic Search [disquiet0592]

For the second part of the trio I added a track to two contributions of the first round: Dandante’s poem and Maybe Going Somewhere by He_Nu_Ri

For both, I added one layer of Plaits using various engines. For the poem, I also used the drum engines of Plaits to add a beat. Maybe going somewhere still is 96 BPM, D Major. The Poem is now 116 BPM and also D Major.

Disquiet0592 - Maybe - Going - Somewhere

I added to @encym's excellent, guitar-based, track, Frugality (https://soundcloud.com/encym/the-loneliest-number-disquiet0591?si=c7a742bc48e04018b5249a736278acdb&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing). I used this as an exercise in MIDI processing in Ableton. I used a MIDI pitch tracker on a filtered version of the original track (to reduce the range of notes), then passed the MIDI to two tracks with Arturia's Augmented Strings (both with a bass pizzicato patch, with slight variations). The MIDI was processed with MIDI echo and note length changes and arpeggiated in both cases. In one case the scale was forced into a Hungarian Minor.

Inspired by the ethereal and mysterious atmosphere of @caustic_gates disquiet0591 (https://soundcloud.com/caustic_gates/disquiet0591-patchouli-wash) I tried to patch something complementary.
I took a pre-existing melody, recorded single notes with a 0-Coast in a Morphagene reel. 0-Ctrl is controlling Morphagene’s playback and splices with pressure gate output and Mimeophon’s feedback and color with pressure cv output. Added auto filter and Vallhalla Plate in Ableton Live. 60bpm

I added a track to @cjmcgregor 's submission

I recorded an improvisation in response to the initial track and then chose a 12 bar loop to cycle against the original 10 bar loop. To break the repetition I manipulated my loop with cableguys shaperbox. To top it off I added some depth with a bit of delay and a hint of vocoder.

I chose https://soundcloud.com/forelight/locrian-x-disquiet0591 by https://soundcloud.com/forelight because I always like drones. 'Locrian' seemed to be the name of a drone band which tends to make apocalyptic music, so I looked for cataclysmic sounds (bass and partly rhythmic noise) and added them. I think there is plenty room for beats, vocals, solos.

For Disquiet Junto 0592 I chose Alyce_Santoro's "Abstraction Cactus Flower." I added an improvised solo guitar to Alyce's flute trio. As Alyce wrote "all are welcome to use this piece as a basis for improvisation," I very much appreciate the Georgia O'Keefe quote Alyce mentioned, and find it resonant with the music here: "Details are confusing. It is only by selection, by elimination, by emphasis, that we get at the real meaning of things.”

Alchemist’s Dance – Written for flute, French horn, and electric piano at a lively 135 bpm, this piece shimmers with a sense of secret ritual and playful transformation. The electric piano lays down a quicksilver pulse, its bright chords and syncopations bubbling like a cauldron at full boil. The flute darts and swirls above, carrying quick, nimble melodies that feel like sparks of magic flashing in the air. Meanwhile, the French horn adds warmth and gravity, grounding the music with stately counterlines and bold declarations that hint at mystery and hidden power.
The result is both buoyant and enigmatic: a dance of elements where lightness and strength, mischief and majesty, intermingle. Perfect for scenes of fantastical movement, mysterious joy, or moments where science and sorcery blur into rhythm and ritual.

Alchemist’s Dance

Jonathan Zorn works as a composer, performer, and curator of experimental, electronic, and improvised music. His electronic music pairs improvising musicians with interactive computer systems to create hybrid, human-machine ensembles. Zorn's interest in vocal utterance has resulted in a series of pieces in which spoken language is interrupted by electronic forces, drawing attention to the gap between speech and sound. Zorn has been active as an improvisor on bass and electronics for 15 years and has performed at Red Cat, the Walker Art Center, the Verona Jazz Festival, the Library of Congress, the Seattle Festival of Improvised Music, Line Space Line Festival, and the Chelsea Art Museum. His work has been published in Ord und Bild, the SEAMUS Journal, Notations 21, and UbuWeb.
