London-based Swedish producer aircode’s debut EP on Alien Jams is ‘basically a very tired EP’.

Written throughout a year of sleep deprivation, “Effortless” reflects a period of disorientation, social claustrophobia, and the unbridled feeling of a loss of focus. A navel-gazing introspective struggle of feeling apathetic and drowsy, yet simultaneously restless and constantly moving. Fractured machine fragments and riddled sleep-deprived speech alongside manipulated drum samples, distorted guitar, are symptomatic of her captivating work in electronic experimental music so far. Using self-generated ‘logical’ melodies, unexpected rhythms, and phone and vocal recordings, the EP offers a challenging, melancholic and ever-changing aesthetic.

Piecing together spontaneous text, and moments of glitch, like an anxious machine, or someone on auto-pilot; “the tracks represent this mixture of apathy and a scattered mind,” she explains, "On the verge of hyperventilation with constantly changing rhythms as you feel your heartbeat and breath loud and out of sync. The melodies are also somewhat dipping in energy," never reaching the whole way up, but giving up and falling down.

Jon has been asking for something for something for Shock World Service for quite a while now and it's a great honour to finally deliver something for the legendary series. Congratulations to Jon for leaving behind such a rich musical archive. 

My mix features all new unreleased work and mainly features music incoming on my new label Awayday, collaborations with Kevin Barry as Cornaleena, Margie Jean Lewis as Mona Lo, Catherine Sikora as Sansbut and with Stano as Spillcrane. 

Also featured are three new David Kitt songs from a record due for release on All City in May 2021 with Katie Kim on vocals. It represents a good overview of a lot of what I've been making in the last while and was put together in Paris during an artist residency at Centre Culturel Irlandais.  

To me it captures the atmosphere of those initial months of coming to terms with this unexpected version of reality we all found ourselves in.

The humble Frog of Earth ponders nothing as it watches its world unfold. Surprised with a sprinkling of rain the Frog quickly becomes overwhelmed and we hear the bubbling of its brain. As the shower passes, the Frog settles into a stupefied calmness and we can hear the swirling water rushing by and the clarity of the air. As panicking birds swoop and flutter around, the Frog is overcome by a fascination and an acceptance of its world. However, as a screeching train approaches and roars by, the Frog is taken from its acceptance and inverted into a world of denial and confusion where faint questions of how and why have seemingly no answer. But as the sun beams out from behind the clouds, the quiet drone of a bee goes by and the Frog, seeing its own glistening reflection, deftly lets go of its questions, and the need of any answers.

Frog of Earth is the debut LP by the Frog of Earth, and is available now to pre-order via bandcamp in single disc 12" vinyl, and in all digital formats.

Started in 2007 by Jon Averill as a way to further explore & expand musical horizons beyond the mainly dance floor-centric music he was playing at the time  &  as an antidote the cheapening of the mixtape format by the glut of .mp3 mixes online with no track listing, no artwork & no real attention to detail applied to them.
