A fundamental idea of “In a World of Binary Perspectives” stems from the notion of binary scaling, zero/one interpretations that one often confronts as life goes on. Composing a new piece is equivalent to creating a small new world. I decided to put some binary ideas into the tiny sonic sphere and then process them over time. The categorically dichotomized ideas stand opposed to one another at times, but are interconnected at some points and then even conceptually assimilated and become indistinguishable from one another. “In a World...” is planned as part of a trilogy for violoncello solo and closely related to the two other pieces of mine, “Re:” and “Montage: A Tale”.

살아가면서 종종 마주하게 되는, 0과 1로 나누어 현상들을 해석하거나 바라보는 체계에 대해 생각하기 시작했다. 새로운 음악을 만드는 것은, 마치 나만의 작은 세상을 만드는 것과 같은 느낌이다. 이 작은 세계 안에 두 개의 개념들을 놓고, 풀어가 보기로 했다. 두 개의 카테고리로 갈라놓은 아이디어들은 서로 경계를 만들기도 하나, 연결되며 어느 순간 동화되기도 한다. 이 곡은 수 년 전 썼던 ‘Re:’, ‘Montage: A Tale’과 연결되는 것으로, 음악적 아이디어와 진행 양상에 있어 밀접한 관계가 있다.

Mantra Mix (excerpt)

Consisting of three movements, Baramgyeol(meaning close to "On The Wind")utilizes a few Arirang tunes from Korea. The idea of the piece was suggested by oboist Yuri Seok, who commissioned the piece. Writing the piece was a rather challenging task, as the pre-existing Korean folk songs are to be recognizable to the general audience while the composition sounds original enough to belong to a 21st-century new music repertoire. Baramgyeol was dedicated to Yuri Seok, who premiered the piece at her recital in 2023.

바람결 - 1 꿈 (Dream)

해령은 해저 산맥을 일컫는 용어이다. 세계의 바다 속에 생성된 수천 미터 깊이에 달하는 산맥에는 중앙해령(mid-ocean ridge)이 있고, 이 해령 곳곳에 검은 열수(black smoker)가 황화광물을 분출하고 있다고 한다. 이 뜨겁고 검은 줄기가 심해의 차가운 바닷물 속에서 굴뚝처럼 굳은 구멍을 통해 연기처럼 솟아나오는 사진을 보게 되었다. 거대한 산맥 속에서 형성되어 지표를 향해 용솟음쳐 나오는 열수, 그리고 햇빛이 없이도 열수분출구 주위에서 검은 열수가 지닌 미네랄을 기반으로 하여 생성된 '장미 정원'이라 불리우는 생태계에 대한 이야기가 경이로웠고, 이와 같은 생명으로의 비상을 음악적으로 표현해보고자 했다.

An oceanic ridge is a term referring to an underwater mountain range. In the world's oceans, there are mid-ocean ridges in a mountain range that is thousands of meters deep, and black smokers are said to be spewing out sulfide minerals throughout these ridges. I came across a photo of the hot, black stem rising like smoke through a hole solidified like a chimney in the cold waters of the deep sea. I was amazed by the story about the hydrothermal water formed in a vast mountain range and gushing toward the surface, and the ecosystem called 'Rose Garden' that was created based on the minerals of the black hydrothermal water around the hydrothermal vent even without sunlight. "Hae Ryoung- Black Smokers" is about conquering life.
