i like the way this builds, deconstructs, and builds again throughout... there's this natural flow to it, like breath from the lips.  The silences aid the emotional peaks.

A swinging lil pendulum of a track. Glad you got me into his movies J. You could also do a more slapstick version of this for comedy value, with bum notes and accidental stops. Nice homage to a great man all the same .

a little bit about this man

there’s something about Buster Keaton that just goes beyond slapstick humor or silent movies. there’s the obvious physical humor taken to it’s extreme, all the stunts in Buster’s films being performed by himself (he would even be the stunt double for many of the other actors), since there was very little technology and no special effects at the time. it’s still extremely impressive and almost hard to believe when you see the stunts. but there are other sides to Buster Keaton’s films that get me even more. a more well known one is the sweet melancholy so often found in his films (reinforced by his signature stoneface), but more personally i’ve always been fascinated by the dream quality that some of the films, and in particular, specific scenes have (some of them could almost be classified as surrealist), one classic example being the movie theater scene in <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwL1y1uITwg">Sherlock Jr.</a> another aspect, that is much much harder for me to explain, is the “twisted universe” that the films take place in. everything is written and happens for comedy, but if you put the comedy aside, it’s almost looks like something out of a Kafka novel, Buster just can’t get anything right, has no luck in basically anything he does or tries, awkwardness and humiliation are ever present, a lot of the characters are awful/mean to him for absolutely no reason, nobody gets spared from the mayhems that happen, all these awful things happen because… comedy. and yet some of the situations portrayed have a shocking familiar effect on me, as though i’ve lived similar moments, and/or shared the same feelings. i can’t say this happens for other movies, and yet we’re talking about films from the 20’s/30’s here. 
(i also love how no one represents “fuck the police” more than Buster Keaton. never seen so many cops chase after one man, it almost makes GTA look soft)

the story of the man himself is, of course, fascinating also, but i think wikipedia, imdb or any documentary will do a better job at this than me, such as this <a href="http://www.nfb.ca/film/buster_keaton_rides_again">one</a> (about the making of a wonderful little <a href="http://www.nfb.ca/film/railrodder/">travelogue short</a> for the National Film Board Of Canada). the part that mostly gets me, is how you can build your own empire, and a production company where you have full creative control over the masterpieces you are creating, and lose everything you had in a few years by signing with a studio, where you have no creative input, to the point where it turns you into an alcoholic. 

anyway, back to the song. since Buster Keaton’s films are silent, and most of the time the soundtracks are somewhat obnoxious (i usually like to add a personalized soundtrack when watching them), it didn’t involve samples like most of the songs on my forthcoming album (hopefully done by the end of next month), and relies entirely on composition. 2 chords, a repetitive piano loop, that goes slightly out of hand and all over the place from being altered, cut, stretched, filtered… with rhodes lines that stabilize the pace a little, and bring out a more emotional side. nothing else used.

The NPNP trio brings together three musicians who hold not only dear places in my heart & musical path, but also in the many creative communities they animate and interconnect. While the trio bears the emblem of composer and leader Jackson Darby’s solo work, it is undeniably a meeting of minds and individual voices that generates its deeply moving music of ecstatic, embodied meditation.

Darby’s immersive and ever-evolving practice with modular synthesis, tape and modern electronic instruments forms the bellows of the group’s sound. Through sheets of warm drone, cascades of percussive, patchwork synth or nearly unrecognizable manipulated recordings of instruments, Jackson’s sound is central to the compositions as the base layers on the canvas are to a painting. He crafts an abundant sonic space for the players to meet in – each at the pace of their own breath and reflex.

Evelyn Charlotte Jo’s impeccable sense of pulse and expressive phrasing at the drum kit simultaneously anchors and propels group improvisation through the absorbing dronescapes. One has the acute sense of free falling at a comfortable velocity as leaves & branches lightly, sporadically make contact at entirely natural though completely unpredictable intervals. Jo is an interpreter with stick and brush, delivering up-to-the-second transcriptions of complex cosmic information as they spot it in the matrix.

James Goddard’s plaintive saxophone intoning can glisten atop the shimmering pane of synthesizer harmonics and rumbling percussion as though time has stopped before his bursts of lyrical cataclysm send compositions into new, unforeseen avenues. His mbira playing evokes a music box winding up and down as though it were the clock guts of the half mechanical half living breathing organism that is the NPNP Trio.

The Trio’s sound – meeting somewhere between Don Cherry’s Organic Music Society and Steve Roach’s transcendent long-form desert drones – is nothing less than that of three wholly actualized players absolutely possessed by the coming together of their practices. One can hear their shared radical joy of exploration, what a pleasure it is for them to carve a moment in time together and how little they ever want it to end.

NPNP Trio  - Mirage Of An Elastic

Cette semaine schisme.s tombe dans le côté avant-pop baroque de l’iconoclaste Joni Void (@joni_void) aka Jean Néant fka johnny_ripper. Connu d’abord pour ses collages épineux, il s’est imposé depuis quelques années comme un des polymathes les plus prolifiques de la scène montréalaise, notamment avec ses collaborations avec N NAO, Maya Kuroki, @sarahpageharp (Page Vide) et plusieurs autres sous l’égide de sa plateforme Everyday Ago. Il nous présente aujourd’hui une brochette de la musique qui l’a accompagné lors de sa tournée japonaise en juillet dernier, incluant plusieurs artistes avec qui il a eu la chance de jouer.

schisme.s vol. 3 - Joni Void

Aujourd’hui nous avons droit à un joli fracas de la part de @leonlouder, grand spécialiste du maniement des fragments rythmés. Sa carrière recoupe presque parfaitement celle de Schizophrénie, avec un premier EP paru en 2003. Depuis, il n’a jamais cessé de faire paraître des simples, remix et collaborations sous son nom ou sous son pseudonyme Vertigo Inc. Son dernier né, Entomophonie (paru en septembre 2023), une commission de l’Insectarium de Montréal, est composé uniquement de sons d’insectes. Il a également mis la main à la pâte en mettant en place l’étiquette @unfulfillment, faisant paraître les disques de plusieurs artistes partageant son esthétique parfois abrasive, notamment les montréalais Bouche Première et @oacem, ainsi que l’ottavien Classics of Form. Il nous présente ici un mélange de son matériel (incluant plusieurs inédits), celui de ses amis et “other stuff I like”, mais l’ensemble est incontestablement du Leon Louder.

Four years lay between An Angel In Alliance With Falsehood and Hate Devours Its Host, Valance Drakes’s brand new full-length for Amek Collective. This deeply personal record sets the producer on yet another path of narrative-driven musical alchemy. Without a doubt, Hate Devours Its Host is Valance Drakes’ most atmospheric work to date. Multilayered ambient soundscapes and spiraling melodic debris are used not as a backdrop but as the backbone of the record. The producer's signature intricate rhythmic structures, subterranean basslines, and hypnotizing sample manipulation are entangled in this drifting sonic environment. All these elements become an inseparable and emotionally intense whole.

We watched this album grow and unfold. As with all things Valance Drakes, the music in Hate Devours Its Host seems that it can be experienced in a breath but truly grasping everything that lies within requires patience and attention to detail. All elements in Hate Devours Its Host are carefully considered, meticulously organized, and purposeful. This full-length is another showcase not just of Drakes' sound design and compositional craftsmanship but an honest representation of life as beautiful or punishing as it can get.
