Ohxalá is the musical project of Maria & Luis, two musicians who originated in Porto, but whose music has origins down the Amazon, across Africa, and in folk sounds closer to their own native Portugal. In mixing these carefully curated field recordings with electronic basslines, Ohxalá’s music brings ritual back into the party, and collects a tribe from the crowd.
The genre of Ethnobeats has blossomed in recent times.
Listeners seek to connect with the rhythms and sounds of the world’s ancestors, and dancers want to move to ancient authenticity. The Ethnobeats movement has Ohxalá pulsing at its heart.
Having just released their latest EP, Pong Disco, Ohxalá is flourishing creatively and has built a global following. That far-flung tribe of listeners are anticipating a debut album, whilst remixes with several acclaimed producers are in the works too.
In traveling the world and trekking into some of its more hidden corners, Ohxalá is forever building their collection of field recordings with tribal musicians and sound-makers of all kinds. Maria & Luis draw up their inspiration from this inexhaustible reservoir of ancient sounds, and then electronic basslines enliven tracks where stretched leather drums once played. In live (re)performance, Ohxalá’s audiences dance to an alternate vision for the future built on a collective past.

The Blue Nile Falls is a waterfall on the Blue Nile river in Ethiopia. It is known as Tis Abay in Amharic, meaning "Smoke Abay". It is situated on the upper course of the river, about 30 kilometres (19 mi) downstream from the town of Bahir Dar and Lake Tana. The falls are one of Ethiopia's best-known tourist attractions. The falls are 42 metres consisting of four streams that originally varied from a trickle in the dry season to over 400 meters wide in the rainy season. A short distance downstream from the falls sits the first stone bridge constructed in Ethiopia, built at the command of Emperor Susenyos in 1626. According to Manuel de Almeida, stone for making lime had been found nearby along the tributary Alata, and a craftsman who had come from India with Afonso Mendes, the Catholic Patriarch of Ethiopia, supervised the construction. Desert Raven,(@desertravenmusic) co-founder (with @dirlasion) of @theodysseymusicpodcast, is a musical artist who, for his whole life, has had a deep affinity to dance, to the harmonic and melodic nature of sound, and to the healing and inspiring power of music. He believes in the power of storytelling as well. A good song should have a powerful message and journey, with a spirit that moves the listener's soul.

Based in Denver, CO, USA, he has grown up and lived around the world, and uses his life experiences in many cultures as the foundation and root of his sound and worldview.

He seeks to create soundscapes with depth and layering of emotion, with extended build-ups and climaxes. He works with music that is primarily longer form and believes that, like our own deeper feelings, good, deep music takes time to surface. As a storyteller, he embraces the epic storytelling tradition, so his music feels epic in scope and very much like a story.

He seeks the mystical groove in all sounds. His signature style has grown and matured into an organic, ethnic, psychedelic, trippy sound, with an ancient feel, evoking a mystical vision experience. He still seeks to explore new soundscapes where possible. He is a versatile artist. Overall, he seeks to bring the audience close, making even larger events feel like an intimate party among close friends and family, where trust, love, and freedom of spirit are paramount.

His personal approach to composition and production is to infuse deeper, more ambient sounds into all he does, to evoke nature and dreams. He believes ethnic, traditional instruments should be used as much as possible and that they can work beautifully with well-crafted electronic sounds. A bass player at heart, he seeks to create rhythm and harmony that penetrates to the heart and brings the heart of the listener and dancer to a level of energy in sync with, as mentioned earlier, deep feelings. He seeks to find and bring the listener to a place of natural, spiritual illumination, where the listener encounters healing, encouragement, and divine purpose.

He’s been DJ'ing for almost 20 years, being one of the best Greek Breaks/Techno/Tech-House DJ's. In his portfolio there are appearances in big festivals (Sola Luna, Balkan Voices, Urban Rhythm, Reworks, Butterfly, Spring Festen) alongside Slam, Felix Da Housecat, Dave Angel, Luke Slater, Dominic Eulberg, Modeselektor, Rob Luis (Tru Thoughts), Coldcut, Octave One, Eddie Piller etc, and many venues throughout Greece and Europe. He has done warm-ups to artists likes Rjd2, Thievery Corporation, Richard Dorfmeister, Nightmares On Wax, Kid Loco, Mushroom (Massive Attack), Frank Popp, Bjorn Torske, Bentley’s Rhythm Ace, Snowboy, Hooverphonic etc. He was one of the first radio producers playing Breaks/Drum N' Bass and Electronica in his legendary “Tricknology”, “Brainwash” and “Cinematica Paradiso” radio shows.
