Ohxalá is the musical project of Maria & Luis, two musicians who originated in Porto, but whose music has origins down the Amazon, across Africa, and in folk sounds closer to their own native Portugal. In mixing these carefully curated field recordings with electronic basslines, Ohxalá’s music brings ritual back into the party, and collects a tribe from the crowd.
The genre of Ethnobeats has blossomed in recent times.
Listeners seek to connect with the rhythms and sounds of the world’s ancestors, and dancers want to move to ancient authenticity. The Ethnobeats movement has Ohxalá pulsing at its heart.
Having just released their latest EP, Pong Disco, Ohxalá is flourishing creatively and has built a global following. That far-flung tribe of listeners are anticipating a debut album, whilst remixes with several acclaimed producers are in the works too.
In traveling the world and trekking into some of its more hidden corners, Ohxalá is forever building their collection of field recordings with tribal musicians and sound-makers of all kinds. Maria & Luis draw up their inspiration from this inexhaustible reservoir of ancient sounds, and then electronic basslines enliven tracks where stretched leather drums once played. In live (re)performance, Ohxalá’s audiences dance to an alternate vision for the future built on a collective past.

Rabih Rizk is a Lebanese artist who blends dramatic percussion with mystical synths and soothing melodies to create tracks that are perfect for the dance floor. This is his second time releasing on Baikal Nomads and his music can also be heard on other scene-leading labels such as Magician On Duty, Heimlich Musik and Pipe & Pochet.

On remix duty, Dario Klein is an up-and-coming producer from Germany who is known for his synth laden style of organic deep house and releases on the likes of Ritter Butzke Records, Abracadabra Music and Bar 25.

Matija and Richard Elcox are a pair of German artists who regularly collaborate on tracks and remixes for labels such as Cosmic Awakenings, Shango Records, Kosa and Camel Riders. They are also talented solo producers who are well-known for their mystical sound that blends chugging grooves with psychedelic atmosphere.

"Baraka" is first of the two original tracks and it's downtempo with spiralling delays of trippy percussion and moody pads. The jerking percussion rhythms, stabbing synths and chanting vocals give a marching vibe to the groove.

"Come With Me" has jerking rhythms and quirky synth lines that layered with trippy vocal phrases, create a jovial groove, forming the foundation for mystic pads that add to the track's hallucinogenic atmosphere.

Dario Klein’s remix of "Baraka" lifts the tempo and adds new percussion to create a flowing groove orientated around the original's pads and trippy percussion. He also adds some sun-drenched guitar licks and pulsating acid bassline to make the track his own.

Matija and Richard Elcox's remix of "Come With Me" is a stripped back version built around the original's stabbing vocals with new percussion and a rubbery bassline.

"Lost, Not Gone" is an emotional journey in three chapters, moving through fragility, inner blocks, and ultimately, release.
The EP was born from a personal need for clarity — a desire to observe my own shadows without filters, but with honest awareness.
Each track reflects a distinct moment in this process: from the effort of standing back up, to the acceptance of pain, and finally, a form of conscious distance and calm.
The sound blends melodic house, emotional minimalism, and cinematic elements, always leaving space for reflection.
This is music meant to be truly listened to — more than just club material, it’s meant to accompany those on an inner journey.

"Still Trying" speaks of the struggle to rise again, always.
Even when negative thoughts hold us back, even when giving up feels easier than moving forward.
This track is an act of emotional resilience, but not a forced celebration of positivity — it acknowledges how difficult it is to keep trying.
It’s like apologizing to yourself for the times you let those thoughts win, while promising to try again anyway.

"To No One" is a silent dedication to myself.
It comes from the need to accept a difficult truth: we can’t change how others behave, even when it hurts us.
The track is built on an emotional loop, intentionally repetitive, representing a persistent pain — but also the strength that grows from self-compassion.
Gentle shifts in harmony act as small gestures of encouragement I give to myself.
It’s not a resolution, but an act of inner resistance.

"Out of Self" is a journey beyond the self — a detached look at one’s own experience.
Creating distance from negative thoughts can become a form of liberation, a way to regain clarity and reconnect with what still feels good.
It’s not about denying pain, but about choosing not to stay trapped in it.
The sound opens up and breathes, as if the air were finally moving again — a temporary peace, just enough to begin creating again.
