Binker and Moses release their debut duo LP Dem Ones on analogue vinyl record label, Gearbox Records

Binker and Moses are tenor saxophonist Binker Golding and drummer Moses Boyd - two of the most exciting young jazz musicians on the thriving London jazz scene. Originally meeting through double bassist/educator Gary Crosby’s Tomorrow’s Warriors jazz development programme, they have played together in various large and small format groups including recording and touring extensively as members of Zara McFarlane’s band.

Dem Ones is their debut recording as a duo and will be released as a 12” 180gm vinyl LP on 29th May 2015. The record has its roots in experiments between soundchecks and gigs while on the road with McFarlane. Over time these initial ideas and jams have become templates for improvisation, and with their echoes of late period Coltrane and Charles Lloyd are as listenable and memorable as they are full of invention and surprise.

All the tracks were performed in the live room at Mark Ronson’s Zelig Studio and recorded direct to Gearbox's vintage Studer 1/4" tape machine next door. The vinyl lacquers were cut directly from this original stereo master on Gearbox’s 1967 Haeco Scully lathe with Westrex RA1700 series amps, using a Westrex 3DIIA cutting head and Telefunken U73B tube limiter, Maselec master control and equalisation and Audio Note monitoring equipment.

I Was So Young, You Were So Beautiful

With their last original release coming in 2016, It may feel like The Busy Twist have shied away from the limelight in recent years but during this time they’ve been travelling and working hard on some of their most ambitious music yet, and in the process have set up their own label Busy Life Records. 

Busy Life is a project focused on joining the dots between West African, South American, Caribbean and UK electronic music by developing a sound which not only melds the sonic genealogy of all four palettes but also presents such crossovers faithfully. Developing an exchange with local artists that works in both directions is key to the label, and crucial to creating borderless music that can be shared with their family worldwide. 

The opening EP on the label ‘Sunny Side’ is a record years in the making and highlights the ever-decreasing gap between UK and modern African music. It is therefore fitting that many of the ideas heard on ‘Sunny Side’ were born during their very first trip to Ghana, and have been continually refined as Afro and UK sounds intertwine year on year. 

The EP is led by strong vocal performances from lead singer Zongo Abongo. An artist from Northern Ghana who has been part of the Busy Life family since its inception. It also features additional vocals from Kyekyeku and Siaka Djarra from Burkina Fasso.

The Soldier's Friend

I'm a pianist/composer and have just finished studying an MA in Composition for Film and Television at Bristol Uni from 2014-15.

I started off writing mainly jazz influenced works for my quartet and then began merging some of these ideas with modern production in the genres of hip-hop and dance music. While I still enjoy creating this kind of music, my own compositions are now far more influenced by film and classical composers such as Thomas Newman, James NewtonHoward, Max Richter and Alexandre Desplat.
