˜It was her humor I admired the most˜

As in we lost our 'Last One'. Less than a month since Kawa’s last wife, ama Olex passed away.
She was the last of my grandmothers.

Last One

Mt Giluwe, situated in the heart of Papua New Guinea. The second highest peak in the country and my old ancestral hunting grounds. A few months ago I and a small contingent of tribesman journey.

Several months ago myself and a small contingent of tribesman journeyed up to the peaks of Mt Giluwe, approaching from the Southern Highlands side of Papua New Guinea.

We traversed many landscapes and endures the brutal alpine cold.  

Thank you to the brothers who endured this very challenging climb with me.

Working overtime and need that 'focus' music? Been listening to a whole bunch of lo-fi inspired tempos. So I found an old track (called Drake trap) and shaved the tempo down.

Living In The Fast Lane - Waka

WAKA has his early influences of music rooted in the Pacific Nation of Papua New Guinea.  Now very much his foundation, the island style of reggae, NauFM bangers and traditional PNG music has been a source of inspiration in many of his track. Waka’s music try’s to reflect the moods he once felt, be it standing on top of a mountain, in a winter cabin, a 2am run through the city, a sunset, any moment that sparked an idea. 

Jonny Waka Kawa is now a Cairns based producer exploring the sounds of Hip Hop, Reggae and Future Roots. Born in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, to an Australian mother and Papua New Guinean father, Waka moved back to PNG with his family at 6 weeks of age. Waka spent his early years in remote villages of the Southern Highlands, particularly in the small townships of Pangia & Kagua. He also spent his early schooling years in the industrial coastal city of Lae, Morobe Province. From a young age Waka was immersed in the humble simplicities of village life alongside the vibrant chaos of modern PNG. Waka’s musical upbringing revolved around a blend of traditional village rhythms, dance, and song, the unique sounds of pacific reggae which dominate the radio waves, as well as all the classic "nesian" island sounds that were greatly influenced by reggae and dub greats like Linton Kwesi Johnson, Bob Marley, Lucky Dube, Barrington Levy and many other founding artists. Yet as a child, Waka was most inspired by the music and dance of Michael Jackson and particularly Ushers's 8701 album. 

Waka found his way to Brisbane where he was introduced to Grimes and 8man from Science Project, and soon after began producing his own music. The old dub influences of King Tubby and Linton Kwesi Johnson were prevalent in his early productions, as were the sounds of early dubstep. Waka also credits classic Hip Hop, J Dilla, Timberland, Dr. Dre, A Tribe Called Quest, and Ryan Leslie, for defining his sound palate and giving direction to his productions. 

Waka spent 3 years living and travelling Canada, the immense beauty of that country incited his creative passion which he endeavoured to translate into his music. Working in Ottawa, he was quickly exposed to people who shared his love of music and soon found an appreciation for genres including Lo-Fi, Chillstep, Lounge, Trap, House, Deep House, Techno, Electro, Afrobeats and Reggaton.
