We are in a time between worlds; the old forms are no longer viable but the new forms have not yet taken shape. The nature of capitalism but also the nature of civilisation is shifting and we find ourselves thrust into a profound period of evolutionary emergence.

This crisis is a crisis of identity; the question of what are humans here to do and be, and if we are to jump, join or collide with the oncoming train.  For we are moving from a civilisation that is defined by a very basic anthropocentrism centred around exploiting the natural resources of the planet to one in which we take up stewardship for all other life forms we share it with.

Contrary to the popular “hero myth” of dominance over evil forces, we should be looking towards deep service. Rather than the conquering hero we become the lover of humanity, embodying compassion and humility. The essence of humanity and of civilization is really just a series of interactions; being able to really be with each other.....Is this an imagination apocalypse - An Imaginocide?

Human-induced existential risks are symptoms of two underlying generator functions.

One of these functions is rivalrous (win-lose) games. This includes any activity where one party competes to win at the expense of another party. The win-lose games are at the root of almost all harm that humans have caused, both to each other and to the biosphere. As technology is increasing our capacity to cause harm, these competitive games start to exceed the capacity of the playing field. Scaled to a global level and multiplied by exponential technology, these win-lose games become an omni lose-lose generator. When the stakes are high enough, winning the game means destroying the entire playing field and all the players. 

What have capitalism, science and technology have created? Among by-products of these rivalrous games are what are referred to as “multipolar traps”.  Multipolar traps are scenarios where the things that work well for individuals locally are directly against the global well-being. Our sense-making and choice making processes need to be upgraded and improved if we want to solve these traps as a category.

Are the current phases of capitalism, science, technology and democracy destabilizing and coming to an end? if so, in order to avoid extinction, we have to come up with different systems altogether, and replace rivalry with anti-rivalry. One of the ways to do that is moving from ownership of goods towards access to shared common resources. We must be at the place where the harmful win-lose dynamics both have to and can change.

Our ancestors’ lives were tightly linked to the natural flows of the Earth – the sun, the rain, and the soil.

But during this moon-shot of growth and consumption, our fundamental tether to nature was first neglected and then forgotten.

The main inputs to our economies were now mostly free – we merely had to pay for the cost of their extraction, not the cost of their creation, their true worth. Nor their pollution.

To our ancestors, the benefits from carbon energy would have appeared indistinguishable from magic.

And, instead of appreciating this giant one time windfall, we developed stories that our newfound wealth and progress had emerged purely from human ingenuity.  

Modern economic theory assumes that productivity (which underpins our wealth and material progress) is a product of labor and capital. Energy is assumed to be just another input with its unit price representing its contribution to economic output. 

One barrel of oil represents almost 5 years of human labour, and human economies only pay the cost of its extraction (currently around $50 in 2022), not the tens of millions of years of natural processes to create it.  We have underpaid for the main input to human economies – and economic texts do not recognize this fact.

A bedouin traveller scooped up by a psilocybinic tractor beam to an interstellar dance school where our hero meets an evil  alien gang leader escaping the clutches of her poor life choices. He makes love to her and her many hundreds of bacterial followers, joining in the fight to right the wrongs of an accursed family feud between rival combative vegetation systems. In the myriad neighbouring galaxies of Panta Rhei, post the interminable weevil-trap revolution, dark storms, results of the heterodoxy between alternative gradual nimbus instrumentation, gastric honesty and limbic psychic illegitimacy, brew like tins of magnetic marouflage, a bond of germinating universal savagery . 

This entire unfolding, including the ensuing violence between gut and lance,  takes place within a rotting tree stump in a forgotten woodland copse located 5 miles from Moose Knuckle, KY.

The Works FM Jonny Picklechin 12th January 2023 "Exertion"

I come back to the house of the long-ago past. And I am amazed to find its spaces vaster than I recalled—starting with the staircase, the part that was clearest in my memory. From our upper floor, I used to go there each morning and sit on the steps, in the feeble light that filtered through the entrance hall’s thick door. I always enjoyed the coolness at the hottest hour of the day. One time I fell there, and my father was frightened; he shouted and took me in his arms.

But I didn’t remember the steps as being so gradual and wide, of such massive gray stone, nor as sweeping this majestically up to the attic—though I retreated there quite often to read. You don’t go up to the attic like that in ordinary houses. Now I grasp that the house isn’t of this world—that it was laid out in another era, elsewhere. And I can almost see beings from that elsewhere grouped around a table. Under their eyes are surveys and maps, immense horizons of long limestone hills. They look at them, absorbed in thought. One of them puts his finger on a survey map, right where two little children, a boy and a girl, are quarreling over an object. You can barely pick it out on this old photograph: is it a small animal they’re holding in their arms? A small life with jerky movements and mewling cries, part of the body of one or the other, or of both? Or was it an entire swath of the enormous starry sky? That morning, the tide of the summer day, though rising, hadn’t yet effaced it. I don’t know what they held there, which they let get away; but now I watch them climb back up the staircase, hand in hand.

Nor have I forgotten that this attic—a low construction of heavy timber, hot and odorous, with a floor of badly joined planks—had served for many years as the final resting place of trunks, left open because they overflowed with old magazines and books. Many of them lay about in messy piles, with numerous volumes of I Know Everything, the “Illustrated World Encyclopedia.” The first page showed a little man dressed in black, his head the terrestrial globe. With a finger—how appalling!—he touches his forehead, his eyes lost in his dream. Kneeling before a trunk, I spend hours reading I Know Everything. I contemplate from afar, through sooty lithographs, the shores of Polynesia, with their beautiful, half-naked beings; or dreadful nocturnal rooms, scarcely illumined by oil lamps, where heads throng in a circle of light—though who they are I will never know.
