Once upon a time Gladfields only grew barley, but a combination of Doug Michael’s dissatisfaction with another company controlling barley prices, his expert knowledge of cereals and a natural curiosity in the malting industry saw Gladfield diversify into malting their product. Since 2003 the family owned business has been developing its customer base and its range and is now seen as a natural partner for New Zealand’s craft breweries.

Where Doug Michael offers Gladfield's technical and cereal expertise, Gabi Michael is the driving force behind the business development, sales, marketing and collaboratively works on strategy for Gladfield Malt with Doug.  I took 15 minutes of Gabi's time to talk about their partnership and the growth of Gladfield as a specialist supplier within the brewing industry.
Interestingly, it was also the first time I have met a Brazilian with a kiwi accent.

Tracey Banner is the head brewer and co-owner of the Sprig and Fern Brewery in Nelson. Her career began in brewing laboratories in Lancashire with some of the biggest names in British brewing. This was at a time when the industry was rife with mergers and acquisitions and just about every one of her employers closed, facilitating a move to New Zealand. Tracey's experience of lab work, quality control and quality assurance has proved invaluable in working with large and small breweries here in New Zealand.
