This tape is produced on the occasion of Jen Everett’s exhibition, Could You Dim The Lights? at the Krannert Art Museum, Feb. 1st-Oct 5th 2024 co-curated by Amy L. Powell, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and Curator of Arts Research. It is a joy what comes to light in conversation about memory, girlhood, and how the body remembers. Jen Everett and artist-co-curator, Blair Ebony Smith (lovenloops), extend and share the conversation about themes in the exhibition with each other beyond the museum gallery space in ways true to us. In the show, Everett revisits childhood photographs to ruminate on popular and queer media portrayals of lesbians from the 1980s to the present, seeking moments and venues – the club, the streets, the dancefloor – where freedom and love are possible, if precarious. As a sonic collage and mix of music**, samples**, and conversation with Jen Everett and sound artist and curator Blair Ebony Smith, we touch on deep forgettings, our Black girlhood experiences as queer, and what space and making space looks like for us. We’d like to thank the museum staff, team, local artists, scholars, and students who have visited and shared the show. 


The artists do not own the music and samples. We see this as a DJ mix to share and extend the conversation. The samples include Tisha Campbell performing live on Good Day LA (2016), Robin D.G. Kelley, Audre Lorde (To be young Black and Lesbian in the 50s), Queen Latifah On Set of Set If Off (1996), Pariah (film) (2011), Eve’s Bayou (1997), Detroit Mix The New Dance Show (1992), Shakedown (2018), a few of Jen Everett’s tiktok favorites and more. 

Music artists featured in the collage include Liv.e, Brian Harden, Caz Ear, THEESatisfaction, Dj Assault, Queen Latifah, Ohbliv, DJ Hiedi, Theo Parrish, lovenloops and more.
