Ray volunteered to add slap to my embryonic demo 'Mama Please Make Me Funky' track and I bit his hand off. Luckily he could still play. Collaboration; it's cooler than an orange and a pink sugar mouse in a large sock. Once Ray sent his bass line over I was inspired to add the funky rhythm guitar. You have to walk a Nile (Rodgers) in another man's shoes… then it was a 9/4 dance number (!) that just needed some vocals and no-one was looking, I was all alone…

Next Day It's All Gone (with Western Skies Motel)

This is my arrangement of the tune Vestapol. It is played in the open D tuning and has been covered in various forms by Elizabeth Cotton, Robert Wilkins, Furry Lewis, Mike Rodgers, John Fahey, Stefan Grossman to name but a few.
Vestapol is a “train song”. It seems it was originally played by ladies in Boston parlours in the mid-19th century.

Here is an earlier version of "Next Day It's All Gone", the piece which follows on this page. This one is a bit less abstract, and a bit more... something. It made me think of summer while we were working on it, when it was very much not summer.

Thanks to Western Skies Motel for inviting me to engage with this piece. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and thank What-It-Is for the miracles I am about to encounter. Then I add, but do you think maybe I could get my acoustic instruments to sound just a bit more like René's?

This week I recorded one of my favorite blues song by the Doors. Paying homage to one of my favorite bands and poet of all time.

 I tried keeping it as close to the original as possible. Playing acoustic guitar instead of electric and adding some rhodes piano in honor of Ray. You will have to pardon my finger drums but it's the best I can do with a keyboard...Sorry John Densmore
