I wrote this song about 12-13 years ago for my band at that time "Spiral Arms".  I re-wrote the Bach-like middle section more recently though.  The main part was inspired by Kings-X. We never could decide whether to call it "Don't Fuck with the Desert Man" or "Don't Fuck with the Desert, Man".  That comma makes a big difference.  

I'm so pleased to have had Dave Palan record the bass track.  Dave is an old friend and was the bass player in "Spiral Arms" all those years ago.  I love all the runs he added. Reminds me of how good it is to work with other musicians you like. Dave always thinks of stuff to add that I never would have thought of.  

I tracked drums and organ and piano in Feb/march 2013 and completed mixing it just now (May 21, 2013) after Dave added bass.  I tracked some stuff rather poorly and I've purchased better mics and snare drums since then - so I'm not entirely happy with it ... but I'm sure I'll say that about all my stuff down the road.  I'm mostly just psyched to get all these ideas out of my head and recorded.  

Don't Fuck with the Desert, Man

New version of an old tune I wrote for Spiral Arms. I recorded drums, organ, and mixed it this afternoon.  I'm getting speedier at this stuff.  
The 16th note hi-hat beat was suppose to sound sort of goofy and sarcastic, but it wound up sounding like I really meant it.  The drums are suppose to be simultaneously technical and sloppy.
 Playing the organ (with my right hand) and organ bass part (with my left) at the same time really helps it sound tighter.  I'm going to try and do that more in the future.  It limits control of the drawbars since my left hand is occupied, is the only problem.  I love to swoosh the drawbars around usually while holding a chord, almost like a filter on a synth, but this tune didn't call for that.

I play drums and keyboards, mainly Hammond Organ, and write lots of weird instrumental tunes. I record them in my basement studio.
