MIDNITE SPARES: COMPILED BY ANDRÁS AND INSTANT PETERSON LP/DIGI OUT 09 SEPT

On Midnite Spares, Australian music devotees András and Instant Peterson hold a candle to overlooked avant-pop and electronic works by antipodean artists and outsiders working through the 80s and 90s. Through co-presenting weekly radio show Strange Holiday, the duo slowly upturned their locale for inspiration - archives, country bookstores, private collections and convenience stores, searching for a place to anchor their own identities in the oceans of the island continent. The 10 tracks acknowledge a minor history, passed on via a network of friends, friends of friends, the libraries of radio station 3RRR and more often than not, the artists themselves.

Renowned mixed media artist Maria Kozic enters with the mysterious downbeat of Trust Me, her partner Philip Brophy responsible for digital and analogue sonic construction. A recurring character in András and Instant Peterson’s investigations, Brophy reappears with a score piece from his divisive feature film Salt, Saliva, Sperm and Sweat, recorded as →↑→ (pronounced “Tch Tch Tch”).

Other links are thread under the surface. Melbourne inner north experimentalist David Chesworth explores his Australiana songcraft leading Whadya Want?. The short lived project also featured Philip Jackson, whose duo The Couch is restored from Fast Forward’s dance issue - a pioneering cassette fanzine published by early-80s 3RRR personality Bruce Milne.

The collection binds a certain musicianship that’s indifferent to fame or chart success, although some artists unwittingly experienced this before and after. Poets of the Machine’s Grace Jones techno-wave was a modest moment for Coral Island and Red Stripe, an English migrant who once celebrated a #1 UK Christmas single with an acapella cover of Yazoo, while the morbid coming of age electronics of Foot and Mouth is a lesser known prologue to Sean Greenway and Matty Whittle’s rise as legendary teen punks heroes God. Quickly becoming a modern dancefloor hit, Mumbo Jumbo’s sole release Wind It Up is only now basking in it’s brilliance.

The remaining figures shape the diversity further. There’s Sydney dub addicts The Igniters, Mix’s groovy synth song about masturbation and the Cameron Allan/Graham Bidstrup soundtrack for petrol headed ozploitation film, Midnite Spares - the compilation’s namesake.

We celebrate two years of Shika Shika with the release of our third compilation: Eco. 

Eco sums up what Shika Shika is about - the global reverberations of styles, genres, traditions and sounds moving around the world and fusing to create inspiring new music. We call it music without borders and on Eco we present 11 tracks that are exactly that. 

The tracks we hand-picked for Eco draw inspiration from traditional rhythms, stories and melodies and fuse them with individual inspirations, sounds from nature and electronic music. This is exemplified on Di Laif’s anthemic opener “Paso Por el Fuego” or Guazú’s incredible “Pava de Monte” featuring Wenceslada. Some artists like Jin Jerei and Oxhalá take us on a journey deep into their roots while others like Didacte and O.R. create atmospheric textural, electronic-organic soundscapes. Ibu Selva’s “Chega de Esperar” is a rework of a Brazilian agrarian reform anthem while Klik & Frik offer up a beautiful edit of Hassan Ben Jaafar, a master of Moroccan Gnawa music. 

It is hard to believe it has been two years since Shika Shika was started as a platform to showcase some of the music we truly loved from the thriving community from Sao Paulo to Seoul. Two years of connections, exchanges, ideas, new sounds and, most of all, incredible support and feedback from the people who listen & buy this music all over the world. We started Shika Shika as a way to give exposure and support to this community, sharing 70% of all the profits with the artists directly, and are inspired to continue pushing the music we love. 

Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. We all appreciate it dearly.

The bubbling water was delicately peaceful amidst the cold of the midnight hour. Sat in the park there was little to be heard but for the trickling pearls which fell from the fountain up above. Sat upon a park bench it was hard to decipher the colour of the flowers which sat alongside the feature, they might be yello, pink, purple or blue for all he cared. The scenery was irrelevant at this point given the temperature of the cold winter night, he shivered and blew smoke into the air, awaiting the arrival of his woman. 

Mozaika is an up and coming musician whom has recently been adopted by the Public Possession family. His new EP titled "Aqua" has apparently been on heavy rotation by the team behind the label for some time.

MJ Lallo sings to trees and distant planets. She plays drum machines, synthesizers and processes her voice to sound like percussion, space ships, trumpets, birds and words from an unknown language. For almost 40 years she worked in post-production music and SFX, founding her own company MJ Productions in 1983. Although she wrote, performed and recorded music for films constantly over the years, she only released one Hi-NRG 12” under a pseudonym, a small-run cassette in the late 80s and a CD in the early 2000s. Séance Centre is committed to exploring Lallo’s unique and fascinating body of work with this maxi 12” and a 2LP compilation planned for spring 2018. 

The Star Child 12” focuses on Lallo’s love of movement in body and mind. Star Child Going Home is a late-night FM boogie transmission, a soaring wordless ode to an interstellar visitor departing. The song conveys a complex synthetic love beyond the realm of language, using voice, Juno 106 and deft LinnDrum programming. Aquarius Blue moves languidly, a sun-soaked Californian cosmic cruiser. Lallo’s voice swims and plays in waves of synth and drum-current, like sun-rays across the sea at magic hour. Filling the entire B-side of the 12” is Deep Dreams, an epic entrancing meditation for synth, drums and voice. A journey and transference of the mind from verbal consciousness to pre-lingual dream-state. Remastered and pressed loud at 45rpm.

“The MBO Theme” (1983) has been a dance floor favorite since decades, created by Mario Boncaldo and Tony Carrasco - the legendary Italian/US duo Klein & MBO. The track got support in NYC and Chicago by greats as Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy. 

The rare version on the flip is created by a South-African band called Warrior. Rush Hour explain how the track came across: “We bumped into this version on a South African record digging trip. It took us a few months to realize the scarcity of this version. Ian Osrin, a well respected engineer in South-Africa who was involved in many 80ties and 90ties Bubblegum, Kwaito and South African disco records, explained us about music distribution in South Africa during apartheid. Because the country was culturally banned at the time, a lot of releases weren’t imported or exported. Even when a track was huge, like “The Klein & MBO Theme”. So South African musicians would create their own versions which were sold locally. 

We got in contact with Tony Carrasco from Klein & MBO. He also hadn’t heard Warrior’s version before, but he liked it. And so do we!!”

KLEIN & MBO - THE MBO THEME (RH RSS 24)

Barra Funda is something of a homecoming for Brazilian producer Spaniol. The EP takes inspiration from the neighbourhood (barra funda) in São Paulo where Spaniol (Felipe Torquato) grew up as a kid and rediscovered when coming back from a long year touring around the world. 

The music is inspired by Felipe’s walks down the streets of the neighbourhood, originally known for its community of Spanish immigrants, going to the local park, Agua Branca, or visiting the neighbourhood’s numerous strange bars.

Opener Moinho is the name of a favela in Barra Funda where, over the past year there have been increasing confrontations between the local community and the police. In February 2017 Felipe met a young kid called Everson while working on the soundtrack for a public theatre piece. The two bonded over their love of rap and poetry and the result is this heady mix of baile funk, deep-dark, organic electronica and Everson’s gravely rap verses.

The EP closes with epic instrumental Asturias, which features guitars played by Felipe (one of the first real pieces he learnt) and is a homage to the producer’s own Spanish heritage.

Agua Branca takes its name, and its inspiration, from a park just two blocks down from where Felipe lives and where he used to play as a kid. Today it has been transformed with an incredible café and has become a nature reserve.

Sale de Baile featuring Tugce & Cosmic e Damiao is a nod to the old-style saloons.

Lavradio is the name of Felipe’s street in Barra Funda and was written alongside Agustin (Barrio Lindo) when he stayed at Spaniol’s place. Agustín was one of Felipe’s first contacts in the scene and the two have built up a close relationship over the years.
